Today is a sad day for several reasons....First being that on Dec 7, 1941 at 7:55 AM....Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked. 2400 Americans lost their lives and many ships and planes were destroyed. This is a time of remembrance. The second reason that this is a sad day....The remaining survivors (120 were in attendance at the ceremony) are getting too old and feeble to attend. Therefore the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association will cease official business duties.

I can promise that I will never forget the sacrifice that these men/women have put forth. I have been in combat twice and I know how it feels to lose a fellow soldier. I will remember all soldiers, regardless of war, regardless of peace -vs- war. I think we should all be thankful of the sacrifice, regardless of nation, race, religion, or creed.

Can't really follow up with anything more appropriate than what you've already said. A shame we are getting to where there are very few left from then. I think when the last people who were there pass on, an event moves from being recent events to just an abstraction in the history books.

Time put together a nice collection of original articles written just after the attacks, the restraint in the writing and in quoted reaction was pretty amazing by modern standards. They also put together a pretty nice slideshow and Bob Landry's work a Life photographer on the island during the attack.

When FDR was going to go to the capitol building the presidential limo was not bullet proof...The secret service was scared that someone might try to assassinate the president. At the time the US govmt could only spend a max of $750 on a car...regardless of who he is. They could not buy an armored car for that so the secret service borrowed a car that the treasury dept had just confiscated from Al Capone.

Oh, there's not a December 7th goes by that I don't think of Pearl Harbor, the victims & survivors, and what came after. But don't measure our patriotism, please, by the speed at which we respond to website threads. You know better than that, sir.

I take time every Dec 7 to remember the 2335 American servicemen and the 68 civilians that lost their lives 70 years ago at Pearl Harbor. I also don't forget about the 16 Million American soldiers, sailors and marines that served in WWII, especially the 400,000 who went to war and never came home. It's also something I explain to my kids since their school doesn't talk about it (or anything much beyond what's necessary to pass the assessment tests, but that's another topic entirely).

There was a very interesting show on the History Chanel that covered the hours after the attack. The level of instant communications we experience today, did not exist then. The commanding officer in Hawaii had to place a call to the Secretary of the Navy in DC, who then had to relay the info to the White House. At first they thought it wasn't that bad, as the commander in Hawaii was being very vague. When pressed for details, he said he was being vague because he could not be sure that the phones were not tapped by the enemy. It was only several hours after the attack, when he was told to just go ahead and give details, did the true level of the carnage become clear to the nation's leaders.

As a child I learned about the reaction of the people to December 7th. On Sepember 11th, I understood.
