I am a registered user but not yet a member -- still getting a feel for the site. I know I cannot "see" things as members do. I have some questions.
1)When I make a comment intended to explain a low score, can the member see what my actual vote was? Does this vary depending on whether I comment? Does this vary depending on whether it's a member or a registered user voting and/or commenting? (As a registered user, I can comment in any challenge, but I can only vote in open challenges.)
My other questions concern scores. I have been trying to read the forum posts fairly regularly to understand the group dynamics of the site as well as the technical aspects.
2) I am getting the idea that it's considered poor form to score an entry lower than a 3 and even a 3 is pretty rude. Does this seem accurate to people? I have been giving roughly as many 1's and 2's as 9's and 10's. Is this inappropriate?
3) Do many members just not score an entry they don't like? I don't like to assign a score to an entry I don't like, but I don't see how else to balance out my voting and make it meaningful.

1) No, voting is completely anonymous unless you state what you voted in your comment.

2) Score what you feel like. Don't let other persuade you to vote differently. According to the site rules, you are actually supposed to use the entire voting scale. //www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_rules.php?RULES_ID=13

3) I try to vote 100% in every challenge if I can, but this is a completely personal preference.

1) see giantmike's answer

2) On a scale of 1 - 10, the average is 5.5 . When I compare the images on DPC with other images from all over the place, I truly feel that the overall level is pretty impressive. Personally, I feel that my own average (cast votes) of 5.9 doesn't do DPC justice, but I guess I'm just pickier than I theoretically think I should really be.
Currently, your voting average is 4.8, so that, to me, says that you feel that DPC overall compares poorly to the other stuff that is "out there". If that is how you feel, then that is your opinion and you have a right to it. As long as you THINK about your votes and hand them out in good faith, you can vote whatever you like.

3)The absolutely fairest way is to vote on ALL images in a challenge. That way, no matter whether your votes are unusually low or unusually high, EVERYONE gets the same treatment and it will average out overall.
If you only vote on some entries, at least vote on them in the order they appear (which is done at random to give everyone equal exposure). Do not "cherry pick" - THAT is what makes things unfair.

There are many voting styles and no one style is right or wrong.

I support that if you don't vote on all images then avoid cherry picking but you shouldn't feel that you need to vote on all images. The reality is that no matter where your average vote falls there's someone else out there to offset you. If your average is high there's another voter with a low average and vice versa. This is supported by the fact that the results for most images are pretty normally distributed.

Give yourself time, develop your own voting style as you go and enjoy.

BTW, 5.5 is the middle of the scale as mentioned above and the historical average for 10 plus years of DPC has been just under 5.5 as well. This means that an average image on DPC typically scores very close to the middle of the scale. It makes no difference at all that an average DPC image is much better than Aunt Edna's snapshots.

2) People tend to complain about people who ONLY vote 1, 2, or 3, or who vote low in order to give their own entry a boost.
Rating on the whole scale (as you are describing) is absolutely encouraged, and completely fine. I too vote on the entire scale.

In my opinion you should judge a picture by the picture...Some people will vote 10, 9, 8 on their photos and then vote 1 for the rest. I personally vote on pictures for the individual pics.....Oh and by the way you can do a lot more stuff when you are a member. 1st of all you can enter a ton more challenges.

You can't vote on your own entry ...

btw, comments are encouraged even if critical. if you get a pm about a critical comment, ignore it.
