From Pop Pop Photo:
CNN Fires Photographers Because Others Will Do It for Free
Consumer and pro-sumer technologies are simpler and more accessible. Small cameras are now high broadcast quality.

Once they started posting twitter feeds as responses during opinion shows I quit watching them. If you are going to have less screening than a local sports talk radio show, you have given up the right to be called a news show.

I'm not sure I disagree with CNN's point of view. If you look at the majority of articles on all 24-hour new delivery media, how often are accompanying images truly quality journalistic pieces? Before I decided to respond to this, I looked at several of my standard media sources: Houston Chronicle, Al-Jazeera, AsiaNewsNetwork. Checking 5-6 stories on each, I notice a broad range of images - some good, some bad, some high quality, some very low, many by professional services and many from i-report-type submissions. I also noticed that most of these articles had a lot of comments to them. The message I get is the the readers to these sites are not there for the images, but moreso for the content and the ability to weigh in on the topic. If the lack of quality photography not a deterrent to readership, why bother staffing or paying for photography when people will readily support the sites with their own images. They now see it as a unjustifiable overhead. An just for clarification, I have never submitted any images to any of these outlets.

They're hiring some from Twitter too.

*sarcastic applause* That's the spirit, CNN! Let's take the livelihood away from real photographers and rely on jittery handheld s**t with blown-out audio (cause they're soooo excited to be there while something's actually happening) supplied by someone with a cellphone!!

Good work, well done, almost as ironic as some now-dead dictator getting the Nobel Peace Prize a few years ago.

I always saw the clips and pictures on CNN. And always heard them say, "and this just in from an i-reporter" followed by a photo or video clip. No name mentioned of the submitter. Credit only given to the "I" reporter. I'm surprised to know people actually did this stuff for free.

Now i'm beginning to understand what the "i" really stands for LOLZ

They're Everywhere!! They're Everywhere!!
And all the time too.
The TV news media just follows the road paved with dollars now. The TV news has become the new soap operas, and the sad thing is that most average people don't realize that, still believing everything that they see on TV to be the whole story.
It's a bummer about the photographers losing their work though. The same is true for other avenues in the pro photography biz. The proliferation of good prosumer cams is making service, excellent and timely product delivery, and reputation as a pro an even more important facet of the business of photography.
