a score-blinded challenge would be a really fun experiment! imagine the anticipation... |

If you turn off your scores and keep them off, you can happily vote away. Your own score will show up after the challenge whether you want it to or not. |

Tested...not possible more than 5 and a half seconds... I believe DPC record is around 2 minutes... after 2 minutes you just want to put a mask on your head and peak your scores, thinking you're cheating :P |

Not so. I leave my scores off for weeks at a time. It's not like I have to worry about whether I have a ribbon in the works. In fact, glad WPL is over so I can go back to blissful ignorance! (Obviously I don't do DPC for the competition aspect of it....) |

Ok, you're one of the unique people here which I call "DPCus no competetus" ... very rare, but those who are here to see their photos getting good votes which I also called "%99ers", update button and visible scores are pretty much addiction :P |

One of the biggest flaws of human nature has been said to be that every person believes they are a good judge of character--whether they are or not. This feeds into this discussion. The simple FACT, researched by multiple firms/colleges/universities etc. is that people hold bias if they are involved in a decision. Everyone likes to think they are the lone rogue that can avoid having their vote be affected by their participation. . .but the researched reality is that this is not the case. It is not a theory, nor is it an opinion. It is fact.

Yes, but how does one respond to this fact? Do you legislate even more strictly against bias, or do you give up legislating against bias?
If you peel away all the layers of bias, you'll find yourself with no criteria left to judge a photo on. |

I have had some comments on my images that are totally not understood, but never do I allow those who think they are experts in photography sway me from my love of the art of photography.
Each image I see is a representation of the photographer. Their vision of their work is important to them as my presentation is important to me. The effort and time spent to create is never without reward.
Voting to me is a priviledge and a glimpse into the mind of who is holding the camera, thus not to be taken lightly. Therefore, I never judge others images as some have judged mine. Just my humble opinion. |

My scores are turned off perminantly. I don't want to know what my score is till the voting is over, so that way, I only have to be disappointed once. |

There is indeed something masochistic about agonizing over a bad score for the duration of a whole week, isn't there? |

I actually have a mental toggle switch: once I drop past a certain threshold I root for it to get WORSE: "Maybe THIS will be my long-coveted BROWN!" So I enjoy the ups and downs, it's the flats I can't stand. What Deb calls the "dreaded 5.5's"

Yeah, I update a hundred times the first few days till I get an idea of where it's settling and likely to end up, then stop worrying/caring about it cause it's a done deal. |

LOL. All I can say is this. Everyone probably responds to bias differently when it comes to these things. . .and I was not expressing a feeling about any other bias but "participation bias" Which I know a bit about as I do labor analysis for a living--not that I couldn't use further education.
Still, does it matter for this site? I don't know.
I just know that a lot of people at DPC want to slap the idea of bias around like it has no merit, when multiple sources show that it does. There are other bias areas I think are more critical than participation bias--but I am not going to fight about those things anymore.
Overall, love DPC. . .but my trailer park nature forbids me not to fight when these things come up.
Sorry.

FWIW I found it much worse having a good score! I had an entry begin at 7.5000 and stay there in the 7s til the last 2 days of voting. Then it dropped down as low as 6.8ish. Thankfully it finally did finish well, but I was having kittens watching in agony each time it got less than a 7 in voting.
Thank gawd I am now sucking as usual :-) |

It is our job to receive low votes and accept stupid comments ... without rebuttal. It helps the newbies learn. Let 'em rage. They will find their own path... eventually.
More importantly, the secret to DPC happiness is to "understand" that votes on your images here are not to be taken as "the gospel truth". The 800 pixel presentation medium does not mean much relative to larger presentations of art in the real world.
I chuckle every day at the comments I get from inexperienced photographers who are pushing down others in an effort to elevate themselves. It's a phase in artistic development. |
