Painting your room; get the 7D.

Painting on a canvas; get the %Dii(iii).

I am hanging in there for the new ones sure to be announced sooner than later.

The built in flash transmitter on the 7D is quite a nice feature. That being said, you do have to have your other flashes in front of the camera. (Sometimes in a small room, you can have them a little behind.) Basically, they have to be able to see the flash going off. That being said, I've only had a very few times where this has limited me. I use that feature anytime I use flash. It's a sweet little bonus.

Personally, my 7D doesn't seem to be that great with noise. I basically denoise almost any picture. But I think I'm also way too anal about it. I just hoped for better. I get a lot of noise when I shoot the sky at anything over 400 ISO. I don't remember this happening with my 40D.

I can live with that. The rest of the camera is awesome!

The noise doesn't seem like a huge issue on the dpreview of the 7D. From others on DPC, have you had noise and lower light issues in daily use? It has never seemed to be that big of a deal on my 30D anyways. This may seem like a dumb and obvious question, but would I regret buying the 5D mk II over the 7D? Im not waiting for the mk III either.

Not a dumb question at all, but they are two different animals. If the speed of the 7D appeals to you, you may find the frame rate of the 5DII a little leisurely. Then again, it's no slouch either. Given the choice, for anything but outdoor sports, I'd take the 5DII in a heartbeat. I will say that I nearly never "spray and pray" in an action situation, but almost always choose my focus point and moment carefully and fire one or at most two or three shots as the action reaches my chosen location. this does color my thinking, which is why I bring it up.
Juliet's post about the 7D noise raised my eyebrows. I still have to take a close look at her RAW file, and once I do (this evening) I'll post back.

The 7d noise was discussed in a previous thread but I can't seem to locate it.
Posting the following images that were posted in that thread also just for info.

Not a lot of light, 1000 iso and then a crop for you to view the noise.

So I'm leaning on the side of the mark II right now, just a little short of affording so I need to time my asking carefully.

Two relevant discussions:
The second is the one you noted

But here is the thing, ISO 100 it wont even take a picture (whether it is P,AV, TV), this is the lowest ISO that it would take this shot at. In morning sunlight outside.

It may have been a bright morning, but the low contrast leads me to think you were shooting in the shade, while the lack of deep blacks suggests a lot of dark shadows around the bushes that the camera would be trying to push toward a middle gray scene. Under those conditions at f/8, it's certainly reasonable to think ISO 100 wouldn't be enough... for any camera. Still, that's an impressive amount of detail on the bird in the second shot for ISO 6400!

She said yes! To the 5D Mk II! However, I need to convince myself now, which in reality is probably the tougher sell.

Just go and do one landscape shoot with the 5D2 and you will be sold!
Bear's comments about it being buttery smooth is dead right. Those were the first words I said when I looked at my first shots. I haven't been sorry once since I got mine a few months ago.

Haha. Yeah, I'm going with the 5D MK II all the way. It's a lot of money but I have saved enough. It'll be about a week until I actually pull the trigger. I am stoked as heck! I blame DPC all the way...

I have a 5D mkII and a 7D - about the only time I use the 7D is as a spare battery case for the 5D!

Very occasionally I'll bring it out for high speed work or to 'extend' my long lens but the overall image quality of the 5D wins out.

I used to think that the dynamic range and highlight handling of the 7D was dreadful but I now keep highlight tone priority enabled and it is transformed. That's interesting because enable that setting on the 5DMkII and you get horrible flat images.

Send it to me and I'll send you a much smaller battery case.

Remember I live in the desert, so bright sunlight most times.

Think at ISO6400 100% crop this is what we would expect. That,s a hell of a high speed.

Great stuff look toward the results.

Ok. Been wavering the last couple days thanks to the 5D Mark II being out of stock for the canon loyalty program and the 7D being in stock. I could save $500 by gettin the 7D. But my wife DID give me permission, it's just that the 5D mark II being out of stock for an undeterminable amount of time has made me waver between the 2.

Given your particular areas of focus, I'd hold out for the 5D II, but either one will be a monster upgrade from a 30D. FWIW, the 7D has a rating of 84% at DPReview, while the 5D II is 79%.

Don't get itchy feet now, you have set your mind on the 5D Mark II, if you buy the 7D because it is in stock it will never feel right and you will regret the purchase until you sell the 7D and finally get the 5D Mark II.

Be patient and wait for the 5D Mark II to be restocked:)

ETA, but having said that, the 7D is a great camera:))

You do have full frame lenses (preferably L glass) that you can use with the 5D MKII - right?

I have the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 and the Canon 70-200 F4L.

Patience. Wait for the 5D II. Don't get distracted or second guess the decision.

Oh, look... here's a brand new 7D for $1254 shipped.
