Never crossed my mind to look at my FS placement.
10 submissions, best placement 105. The interesting thing that I found was that the average mark for place 105 was 6.04 and 8 from commenters!

Remember you only are playing against the users that have signed up for the 2012 FSM; not every user that entered the DPChallenge.com Free Study.

Below are the 2011 Top 10 User's average scores and the amount of challenges they have entered nth/10. The far right column is their current ranking. So you can score well but you have to enter as many FS as possible.

Not only are these averages obtainable but a lot of the FSM users have a great chance at winning as long as they enter as many challenges as possible.

User Avg. Score Entries Rank
nightpixels 6.5644 10 1
Cuttooth 6.5150 10 2
lvicari 6.4778 6 31
wizardry 6.4753 9 5
Budya 6.4726 1 97
alexkc 6.4050 10 8
darnok 6.3570 10 4
Judi 6.3541 10 7
Jaimevinas 6.3523 7 24
vikas 6.3461 10 11

yeah right! You even used my old 24-105 to grab this recent top ten finish with a score approaching 7!

Well, count on you to find the anomalous result, my only FS result in single digits. ......

2012 Free Study Marathon (FSM) Rules

Participation

1. Any DPC member wishing to participate in the 2012 Free Study Marathon must sign up before Midnight, December 31, 2011 (EST). The FSM will match DPChallenge server time, as listed at the bottom of each page at www.dpchallenge.com.
2. Since DPChallenge.com's regular, scheduled Monthly Free Study challenges are member-only challenges, you must be a paid member of DPC to participate in the Free Study Marathon side challenge.
3. If a participant's standing changes from member to registered user during the season, s/he will be unable to enter the Free Study challenges, but will remain active in the FSM and retain the points s/he has earned. Should a participant return to paid-member standing, s/he will again be able to enter DPC Free Study Challenges and resume earning points in the FSM.

Disqualification

1. Monthly Free Study entries disqualified by DPC will not earn any FSM points.
2. On the first of every month, the FSM will audit the prior month's Free Study results to determine whether any disqualifications have occurred since DPChallenge first posted the official results. Any FSM points earned by subsequently-disqualified images will be removed.
3. Any entries disqualified by DPChallenge after the first of the month FSM audit has taken place will be viewed as valid by the FSM, and any points earned will remain.

POINT SYSTEM

Points Overview

The FSM awards two types of points each month to members who participate in that month's DPChallenge.com Monthly Free Study. The two types of points are “Monthly Participation Points” and “Improvement Points”, and they are combined to determine each participant's overall FSM score, as explained below.

Monthly Participation Points (MP-Points)

Each month the FSM awards participating members with Monthly Participation Points. Participants earn points based on their score compared to other FSM participants. The MP-Points are based on a percentile scale, meaning that the most participation points that can be earned in any given month will be 100 and the least will be zero: the highest-scoring FSM participant will receive 100 MP-Points, while the lowest-scoring will receive zero MP-Points. MP-Points will be carried out one decimal place to minimize the chance of a tie, and each participant's MP-Points will be added together to total their overall MP-Points as the season progresses.

Improvement Points (I-Points)

Improvement points are based on the participants' DPChallenge.com overall average as of January 1, 2012. Each participant's DPC average will be recorded on that date, and each participant's monthly FSM scores will be compared to that starting average. Participants who fail to improve on their averages will not be penalized, but those who do improve on their average will be awarded I-points.
Improvement Points will be calculated as follows:
Score less than or equal to the particpant's beginning DPC Average: 0 points
Improvement of .0001 - .2499: 1 point
Improvement of .2500 - .4999: 2 points
Improvement of .5000 - .7499: 3 points
Improvement of .7500 - .9999: 4 points
Improvement of 1.000 or greater: 5 points
Each participant's monthly I-points will be added together to give total I-points as the season progresses.

FSM Total Points

“FSM Total Points” is the Overall Monthly Participation Points and Overall Improvement Points added together. The FSM Total Points will determine the ranking of all participants during the course of the FSM, and at the conclusion of the season the FSM participant with the most FSM Total Points will be the Free Study Marathon Champion.
Gaps in the Schedule
The FSM is not an official DPChallenge event, and we have no control over the scheduling of the challenges. In the unlikely event that one or more of the Monthly Free Study challenges are not scheduled or completed, the missing month simply will not be counted in the FSM results.

Tie Breaker

In the event of a tie, the participant with the most Improvement Points will be named the winner. If the tie remains, the participant with the highest Monthly Total Points in December will be declared the winner. If the tie persists, we will go back as above, month-by-month, until the tie is broken.

Prizes (Gift Certificates)

1. The 2012 FSM will award gift certificates of $100, $75, and $50 to the first, second and third place finishers respectively.
2. At the end of the 2012 FSM the participant that earns the most FSM Total Points (a combination of monthly points and improvement points) will be the 2012 FSM winner.
3. First Place (the FSM Winner) will receive a B&Hphoto.com gift certificate valued at $100.00 USD. Second Place will receive a B&Hphoto.com gift certificate valued at $75.00 USD. Third Place will receive a B&Hphoto.com gift certificate valued at $50.00 USD.
4. The FSM ranking for the 2012 year will be posted on January 8, 2013 after DPChallenge.com posts the results of the December 2012 Free Study. The FSM will audit the standings on January 15, 2013 to verify that there were no disqualifications after the results were posted. After verification, the FSM winner, along with the second and third place finishers, will be contacted by DPC PM with directions for redeeming their prizes.

Scott, as usual you are doing a fantastic job around here by making these challenges even more exciting than they are. One thing that I am not a big fan of is how you calculate your Improvement Points. Of course it is only a matter of opinion so feel free to disregard, but I am not sure comparing a free study score to the overall average is the best way to reward extra points to the participants. What I think is a more fair way of doing Improvement Points is to compare the free study score of each month to either the score from the previous month or to the average of all the free study entries of a particular individual to date in that particular year (expect for the last entry of course because it is being used to compare to the rest of the entries of the year). This way, the 1st free study entries get no I-points, then the I-points start to build up by comparing your latest entry to the average of the rest of your free study entries in that particular year. This way we are comparing apples to apples because IMHO Free Studies are a whole different animal and take a whole different mentality to approach them. I personally don't see a connection between the overall average of all the challenges entered since one registered on DPC to only the free studies. Just my 2 cents of course, but it is your game so feel free to do it anyway you'd like! Again, great job as usual and thank you!

I don't really look at my exact numbers but if I know I did crap this year are you saying the percentages show that I'll probably get about a 6.616 average next year?

Thanks for your input. If I'm not mistaken I looked into something similar to what you are suggesting in 2008 and did not see a great difference. However, I will take you suggestion and run a side-by-side comparison throughout a quarter of the 2012 season to see if it something that could enhance the FSM in coming years.

Thanks,
Scott
