OK with a new job comes new opportunities. I am trying to compile a list of equipment (a wish list) that I should purchase to update my hobby to todays technology. I am a canon user so I willl remain with canon. 1st I was thinking about either a new tripod or a new canon 60d body. Also I would like to know your favorite lenses.

The 60D sounds good, what about the 7D?
I still love my Sigma 12-24, but unless you go for a full frame body, a 10-22 or similar would be at the top of my list. My Canon 70-200 f4L is pretty awesome too.
The biggest question is what limitations have you encountered that your current equipment imposes on your photography? |

60d is more affordable...and attainable.

I love my 60D.
I just picked up the 100mm 2.8 and i must say its a stunning lens. i haven't really used it for macro, and combined with my 50mm i may never use the kit lens again unless i need a landscape shot. |

The EF-S 18-135 that comes as the 60D kit lens is pretty nice and I think you'll be happy with it as an all around do-everything lens. It's been doing very well for me. You already have the Canon 70-300, I believe? I'd suggest looking at some ultrawides and you'll have a good of lenses that will cover everything but special situations. Maybe a macro lens or a set of extension tubes if you enjoy doing macros.

it really depends on what you mainly want to shoot. i have found that when it comes to shooting scapes of any type, a sturdy, portable tripod can make almost and body/lens combo do a better job than hand-holding.
you might also want to check out strobist.com; you might find that you'll want to invest in some light-weight lighting gear.
it also depends on how much money you want to spend ;-) |

If and when the digic5 comes out next year in the 70D, it might be a much bigger shift than we have seen in a while in that line. I would probably hold off on the body and get some glass. And a tripod. If nothing else once the 70D drops the 60D will be cheaper.
My progression was to buy the 50mm 1.8, then the Tamoron 28-75 2.8, and then the 10-22 efs. Now I'm on to collect L glass, but they will be a supplement, not a replacement to those lenses.
But get the tripod first, it will be the least money for the greatest improvement in image quality that you can get.

I was always told get the best glass you can afford then upgrade the body later, good glass average body will do more than great body average glass
Despite the obvious night photography/macro/landscape how often do you use your tripod? I shoot free hand mostly as its more freedom and creative angles
I've got a big manfroto with ball head and fluid head, awkward to lug around
I went 20d 17-85
70-200 f4 l (sold to mate on upgrade to 2.8)
28-70 2.8 l
50mm 1.8
70-200 2.8 l
Macro extension tubes
5d
Sigma 1.4 30/50
Sigma 12-24 (sold to same mate on wide l purchase)
16-35 2.8L
85 1.8
Then next will be a bigma 50-500 or a canon extender for the 70-200

i actually dont like sigma as a brand. I have one and i just dont like the quality that i get from it.
I would suggest something with range, but it also depends on the type of photography that you want to get into or stay in. portraits, landscape, etc etc... |

i would suggest looking at those photographers who do that kind of photography, and see what they have. i'm not much help when it comes to that. |

Which Sigma lens do you have? Just because one of their lenses isn't that great is no reason to say all Sigma lenses are bad. I was very disappointed in my Canon 28-135 lens, but that doesn't mean the entire Canon brand is crap. |

I lack the stealth to get those with a wide angle lens. I own the Sigma 50-500 and while it has it's drawbacks it is a great lens for critters. I have tried the canon 100-400 but between the missing 150mm in range and the push pull zoom i don't like it. Having gotten used to the rotating zoom on the bigma I just can't seem to balance the big white lens, keep the subject in frame and pull the end of the lens away from my body (unless it's on a tripod). Folks will tell you the sigma is slow to focus, and it is slow but anything with that big a range is slow. Primes are fast, zooms are slow. Some say it is soft, and I say

Golden opportunity here to invest in one of Canon's legendary offerings, the 70-200mm f/4L... Possibly the best bang for the buck in the L-glass arsenal.
