It's free now, while in Alpha. I sat down to try it out yesterday, and didn't realize nine hours had passed until the wife gave me heck.
Check it out:
Minecraft.net
Single or multiplayer. I've got a huge red tower, with a goofy attempt at a Canadian flag on it at a server named "Freebuild 255". It has a water elevator you can swim up. |

Over a year later and I bought the paid version last night, $22, so now I can actually mine and craft stuff, and play in Survival Mode.
There's a guy who makes Minecraft videos, TobyGames, and he really cracks me up. He rambles on insanely while playing. I find him hilarious.
Anyhooo...
Judging by the response this thread got a year ago, nobody cares.

Oh, I tried it out. For half an hour. Wasn't particularly whelmed, so it slipped out of my sphere of awareness. I'm happy you're happy, there in the mines, but it's about what I'd expect from an expedition geologist...

My son introduced me and I was hooked for a while, but I've finally become unhooked. We had some fun building some forts/castles and exploring. My last goal could have been to find a Stronghold, but that may have taken some work without a cheat.
It's a fun game though. |

Those were some of the fun days of my life, when my son and I explored video game worlds together. This was on Nintendo, then Sega. We LOVED the Zelda games, on Nintendo.

Unfortunately, mineral deposits in the game don't follow many geological realities. But that's understandable. I just started last night, so I'm working on making some tools and a shelter to keep safe from the nasties that come out at night. I'll be mining soon. Hopefully I can find some diamonds so I can make some indestructible tools.
Toby, of the videos linked above, has hilarious adventures.

My son has been bugging me to download this for the past few weeks. But, he already has an Xbox 360 with live, and Wizard 101 & World of Warcraft on the computer, so I've been saying no. He's already "too busy" to go out and play with real friends most of the time anymore. |

WTF?!! - I thought your post a year ago was advice about how to become a geologist... Do you know how many hours of gameplay I've invested in minecraft to get qualified???... |

What is the point to this game? |

There is none. You make your own point. It could be to construct something (including massive structures, just peruse YouTube to find people that have waaayyy too much time on their hands). It could be to survive and collect things. It could be to hunt bad guys. I liked just exploring the world and finding cool and new features. Finding dungeons and ransacking the chests is fun too. |

Don't despair, sometimes it is just a matter of searching until you find something by luck. I've read stories of prospectors who explored all summer, just to find the gold deposit under their camp during winter break-down.
There may be some specs Minecraft follows, such as diamonds deep down, near magma. Or whatever below hills. I'll give you the honorary stamp of GEO-101 for picking up a rock hammer. ;-)

I watched a video series where a couple of guys with English accents worked through a number of goals, starting on an island with very few resources. They had use what was available wisely. Also, their banter was entertaining. Everything sounds more intelligent to me with an English accent.

You could hunt bad guys in creative ways, such as setting weird and wacky traps. That inspires me... Maybe I will try to find a way to corral a herd of bad guys into an enclosure, then I can put on concerts for them. Maybe I could create a TNT device big enough to blow them all up in a fantastic display of glorious guts.

I would, once I either get an xbox or finish building my high end media/gaming/production PC. |

i'm waiting for the next Zelda to come out.
Zelda 64 is quite possibly, still, the best game ever made.

Was that the one in the gold box? My Zelda history is a bit fuzzy. Btw, I didn't realize Nintendo was founded in 1889. That's a lot of generations playing the same 3-4 games. |

I did customer service for Nintendo when I was 16. I don't know how many kids asked me how to find the white sword in Zelda...

In real life or in minecraft?
But I'll gladly take that honorary stamp if it means I can put more letters after my name.
