The below is a grab from my friend Jon_H's profile...

Comments:
Made: 1,039
Helpful: 915
Received: 785
Helpful: 786

Just wondering how the hell he has only received 785 comments but been able to mark 786 of them as helpful?!

Any ideas? Website bug? Is this showing comments from challenges in voting as far as helpful goes but not tallying them towards received just yet?

It's happening to me as well, and occasionally with differences of more than only one comment.
I think the two figures are updated independently and comments state do change frequently, for instance, when people update the content in any way the helpful flag is dropped.
So, perhaps it just takes a bit for the system to catch up. Just a guess :)

For instance, now I have:
Received: 46
Helpful: 54

Hemmm, no, maybe you are right, there is reason to worry :)

I'll postulate that the "received" statistic may not update for comments received on entries in voting, but the "marked helpful" statistic still may.

Some comments are twice as helpful.

Exactly, that happens when you click the mouse button harder...

Also,

When you leave a comment on your own image, it counts as a comment but you cannot mark your own comment as helpful.

Yes but that would mean you have more comments overall than helpful ones. The issue I was highlighting was where you actually have more helpful comments than you actually have comments i.e. having only 90 comments overall but 100 helpful comments :-)

wha if he marked a comment as helpful and then person later retracted it.

That very neatly explains why I sometimes feel I can't help myself!

ETA; Sorry, couldn't help myself! ;-)

The comment count seems to get scrambled when you have an image in voting, so maybe it's something done to keep voters from checking comments to see who the images were entered by.
During periods when I have nothing in challenges, the comment count gradually resets itself to a 3 comment spread in my profile. Those 3 were comments that I made long ago on my pix. I try to use the 3 spread to keep up with marking comments helpful, so that I know when someone has posted a new comment.
