I have a client that I took family portraits for and they want 8 X 10, 10 X 13, 5 X 7, 4 X 6, and 8 wallet sheets.

I know this depends from photography to photographer but was wondering what you charge?

1st of all how long did the photo shoot take....i.e. 2 hrs....3hrs...etc

The stuff I sell mostly is horse show stuff. Currently I charge $20 for 8x10, $15 for 5x7, $10 for 4x6. Due to the size and loss of detail you'd get at wallet size and 3x5 I don't offer those. However I would offer those sizes for portrait, don't know really what I would charge for them. Some clients want a CD of the images, for which I charge $50.

I get a professional lab (Henry's) to do my prints, and I do tell my clients that, so they know I'm not getting El Cheapo photo kiosk prints from the drugstore, which use inferior inks and paper. So part of what I charge goes to cover printing costs, the rest is markup. Charge too low a price, and people will wonder why.

I charge extra if I am expected to deliver the prints, or have to ship them, or if the client wants them at the very last second esp during holiday season. I am very up front about these extra charges so nobody can say they're blindsided,

Fwiw, the length of the shoot imho has nothing at all to do with how much the prints cost. I still have to cover my costs and try to make some profit.

Hope this helps!

Thanks that's good advice to use about the papers. I was having trouble finding a good printer online that would also do a 10 X 13. I found Winkflash. They seem really reasonable and use Fuji paper. Anyone ever use them? Experience with them? They were the top google search for prints.

I've been getting most of my prints from Costco (Fuji paper, Fuji and Noritsu photo printers), and otherwise from KodakGallery if I want metallic or other special paper (they still have true black & white photo paper). I prefer prints on photo paper to inkjets, though I occassionally make a large print on a professional 7-color Epson proofer at the print shop where I work sometimes.

I need to raise my print prices ... :-(

for general stuff (sports, events, community, etc), i typically charge $20/sheet (1 8x10/12, 2 5x7, 4 4x6, 8 wallet). if multiple sheets of the same image are ordered, i discount each subsequent sheet. i set my pricing to encourage multiple sheet purchases, or at the very least single sheet purchases. my single 4x6 and 5x7 prices are not ridiculous, but still not high enough for me to recoup all my editing time.

for portraits, i charge more.

good luck!

fwiw, here's my take on a popular approach to what to charge for an 8x10.

Should mention that I do offer discounts. If someone orders more than 5 prints in any size, they get a break on the price - so if they order 6 8x10s, they're $15/apiece as opposed to $20.

Frankly, I am willing to be more flexible on the price of a shoot, but not the prints. They're a fixed cost.
