Got a box of these from my 82 year old Grandma and trying to do something with them as my granddad passed away this year.

they are from 1950 i think going off how old my 65 yr old dad is on them, so ive tried scanning them on mum and dad canon all in one and a quick edit in picasa

and got this

but was wondering if there might be a better way?

local pro lab wants £10-£20 a barrel scan, reckon theres a 100 or so of assorted quality shots int he box

don't know what's available to you in the uk, but i just sent off a batch of slides to a US-based service, gophoto.com. my local lab does this, but the prices are cost prohibitive when you have 1000's of prints or slides to scan. i've tried a couple different scanners here at home, but the workflow was too time-intensive to really do it right. since these guys are no-risk, i figured i'd give them a shot. hope you can find something similar.

Drum scans are certainly going to get all the detail that's there to get... but the cost will of course be prohibitive, and you still won't get 'round all the defects that are there. It's certainly possible to do a flatbed scan, and get very good results. It's also possible to set up a backlit situation and photograph them with a DLSR, and this works surprisingly well. The disadvantage to the DSLR method (also not possible with the majority of flatbed scanners) is that you can't do infrared dust reduction, which is possible and quite effective with a film scanner.
You might try having a drum scan done of one of them. Pick one that has some defects, and see how well an infrared cleaning pas will clean them up. Try capturing the same one with flatbed and DSLR methods, and see how that compares.
