I love this idea. I seem to find myself shooting these subjects often.
Recent challenge entry...that tanked, lol!! No door, but the lock and handle are still there!

Wa Hoo...I got a Challenge Suggestion in!!! Well here are the Challenges that "apply" to the current one...Should have added Windows to it...sigh

I really like these "random" object challenges. My scores are pretty back and forth on them, but it makes me look at standard objects in an un-standard way. Good for me as a photographer and a person. During the Paradoila challenge, I was staring at everything sideways for a week.

Oh, this will be so fun! Lots of ideas....but can I get them to look good, lol! Should be fun to see what gets entered.

it IS a gate Paul...

But there's only a fence on one side -- locking the gate isn't going to keep anyone out.

These are the kind of pictures that terrify me to enter. LOL. Too many DNMC fans woujld nail me on the fact that a gate must close to be a gate. . .though I am not sure if that is strictly true. LOL.

But it IS closed and it clearly is a gate...it does not have to be closed to be a gate...think of the secret garden and someone opening the gate to enter....

Well, I'm not sure what we are arguing about anyway ... :-)

The challenge it was entered in was Abandoned, and had nothing to do with whether or not it was a gate. My "unclear on the concept" reference was to the people who applied several locks to the gate, as if that would prevent anyone from gaining access to the property beyond, when they could simply walk around the end.

Besides, a gate attatched on only one side to a fence is not really functioning as a gate, but more a moveable fence-extension ... unless, of course, that way around the end is protected by a magical invisible force-field -- I bet that was it!

You don't have to "function as a gate" in that sense to BE a gate. I've seen plenty of ornamental gates in gardens appended to no wall or fence.

Well, I'm not arguing that it's not a gate, just that it's stupid to waste exposing a perfectly good lock to the elements or vandalism, when it adds no useful function to the gate -- it may be symbolic, but is practically ineffectual.

ROFL!! And this is why shooting for DPC challenges is so "interesting", lol! It's a gate! It fits the challenge, regardless of WHAT the gate is attached to! When you go buy fencing, you also buy a gate. When it's stacked with all of it's gate friends in the sales area...it's still a gate, lol! :P

My bad example was still a lock and a handle...regardless of whether or not the door was missing! Still IS a lock (and locked, too).

AND...regarding Paul's image...the lock may have been placed on the gate BEFORE the section of fence came down. Prolly some drunk teenagers ran through it...J/K!!!!! If the "locker" doesn't go by there often, they may not know that the lock is now useless! *gets off soapbox* (giggle)

Stop taking my ideas. He is also a knob, and I was so going to double score on that fact.
