Fairly new here and wondered what the general opinion was on using a border for a challenge image?
Is this treated with the same sort of hatred as photos of children and pets and likely to get some instant bad marks or if the border adds to the image would it be OK to add one?
Thanks |

Tough one. Some images score well regardless of the border, some get beaten BECAUSE of the border. Generally you are relatively safe with a simple white or black border, maybe black-white thin-thick border BUT color and big borders score very low as a general rules regardless of what is inside. |

Thank you Margaret. That is most helpful and I think on this occasion I will avoid a border to be on the safe side:) |

I call them the "Border Patrol". Anytime you use a border, someone will dislike it and leave a comment letting you know they feel the border was a bad choice. Everyone will say borders are fine when used appropriately, but you know what opinions are like. Everyone has one, and they are all different.
I kind of like borders for some pics, especially a moderately wide white one. It gives me the feel of a printed photo that I am holding in my hand. I don't often use other types of borders but when I have, I go in expecting some negative comments about it. In this case I really felt the border worked for the image and I think it actually helped the score on average, but it still attracted some negative "tsk, tsk" type comments.
Occasionally someone will enter a totally ridiculous border and I'll high vote it just to cancel out some of the votes from the Border Patrol.

If in doubt leave it out. |

3 of my top 5 photos have borders, of course my scores aren't all that high but still. I have done some borders that I feel enhance the photo and I have done some terrible borders. I think some photos fit well with a nice border. |

My border was a kind of weathered look so I am definitely leaving it out though I personally prefer the photo with this border as it makes the photo look aged. The fear of the border patrol is too great to risk it:) |

7 of my top 9 images have borders; that's the ones I see on my profile page. The same trend holds true for me on a cursory glance down my list of top scores. However, most of my top scores are older, because scoring has gotten tougher (or I've gotten out of touch with the voters, take your pick) and it's my gut feeling that there's been a bit of a turn against borders in the last couple years. Certainly, when I use them I make them simple borders now.
I mostly use borders to get a white surround on images that don't work well on gray, now, or to letterbox skinny, horizontal images that seem to benefit from it. Here's a couple examples of images I felt needed separation from the gray DPC BG:

I dislike the DPC concept of "border patrol".
In this setting if you care about getting a good score, you are trying to please your audience.
You will be judged on every aspect of the image, and adding a border is just as much a part of the package as any of your other decisions and actions that shape the final product.
Why is it ok to vote on / judge some of those elements, but not others?

It is OK to be judged on all elements -- the (negative) reaction is towards those who profess a universal dislike of every single border, and (often quite harshly) vote them down on that basis alone, regardless of the quality of the image or the "appropriateness" of a border in that particular case.
I think there will always be resentment towards any sort of blanket voting scheme -- voting down all photos sharing some particular characteristic (flower, kid, dog, bug ...) -- without making any finer differentiations in quality among those photos. |
