Apparently crows are the size of pigeons whilst raven are the size of hawks. And their calls are different. Based on this, we only have ravens where we live but their calls are quite different to what they are meant to be. For all I know they could have crossed with one another and the result is what we have residing in this area. So call it a crow or call it a raven...whatever...but my cat still reckons they taste the same!!!! |
haha my cat probably would too haha. i think all we have here are crows.... but i'm like almost in baltimore so i don't know they would have to be here somewhere .....ooh chit wonder if i can get a pic of the football team |

If you can't decide which it is, just call it "Craven" and be done with it :-)

I'd say crows are half-again or twice as big as either the regular pigeons (a.k.a. rock dove) or the mourning doves we have around here, but ravens are half-again or twice as big as crows. |

Well they are corvids, like Judi said, so yes they're members of the crow family. But they're huge compared to crows and have much thicker bills than crows. And in fact crows have been known to get together to mob hawks, owls, eagles and yes, even ravens...so should you see a murder of crows chasing a really frickin huge crowlike bird, well, it's likely a raven. |

I found this when I googled a size comparison for a raven and a crow.
//www.flickr.com/photos/rick_mcgrath/3637772084/
Going by the looks of things these are your average N American crow and raven. As you can see the crow is much smaller and sleeker looking, the raven is much bigger and burlier all around. Even the guy compares them to a Honda and a Mack truck.
Ravens also photograph more impressively; in the movie The Crow, a raven played the pet crow. All very confusing, I know! :-)

Any bird would be in a black mood after being saddled with a name like Quoth |

It's a pity I can't enter the same image twice, so I could try to pass this Crow off as an anorexic Raven.

Just the image I had in mind when I saw the challenge. Looks pretty well fed to me, though :-).
How about this one?

Hmmm... never realized how difficult expert editing is. Will work on it a bit more but I also have a fall back idea. |

LOL - I'm amazed that you could pass that little bird off as a crow, Bear!
:)
Anyhow, ravens have pointy tails, crows straight across ones - well, except when they are flying.
This is a crow:
.
It as seriously discriminated against, in the scoring of a long-ago Challenge.
Oh, yes. And it's pretty difficult to tell "big" vs "little" size when they are flying. |

Little? LITTLE? It's HUGE by our standards. Seriously. We get bunches of them around here at certain times of the year, and they are by FAR the biggest birds around our yard. I get to observe them a lot. They are very big birds. I used to wonder if they might BE ravens, they seem so big. These are like 14-18 inch birds or something.

Yeah, they're pretty noisy too and will eat you out of house and home.
I have seen them pursued by small birds at nesting time. The littler guys
gang up on the crows and chase them away from nests. Talk about pecking order.
those birds have it down pat. |

Firstly, we have crows here in CT, big ones. Hawk size, not pigeon size. and they are smart, and brazen.
Secondly, I did an elaborate set up for an entry to the challenge, way too much, seeing it was an expert challenge, but that being said, 5th day without power, perhaps no way to upload. |

Well I have tossed my entry into the mix and bumped it up to 31 - it will be what it will be, hopefully someone will like it.
It would be nice to get over 50 entries. Looking forward to seeing what everyone came up with....and hopefully it's not all ravens;-P |

Judi I was sure you would enter this. Edgar Poe wrote more than just poems or stories about Ravens though, it would be boring if thats all we saw shots of. |

I am in. Scrapped my first idea because I couldn't get the editing to work out how I envisioned, ignored my second idea due to a lack of a required element and shot and edited my third idea. Hopefully this is more inspired then my last couple of entries. |
