I just got an emial about a contest for logo making. Winner gets an iPad 2...

I am not asking you all to do it for me but rather giving me ideas.

Here is the email.

QEP LOGO CONTEST
THE WINNER WILL RECEIVE an iPad 2 (16 GB WiFi Model)
Second and third place winners have a choice of a Nintendo Wii or an iPod Touch (8 GB)

Calling all Warner University students, staff, faculty, and alumni! Warner University is holding a contest to find a logo that represents our Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The Quality Enhancement Plan is a component of the reaffirmation of accreditation process. Each institution that is reaffirming its accreditation is required to develop a five year plan to improve student learning or the learning environment at the institution.
The QEP topic is Digital Literacy. The slogan is EDGE: Enhancing Digital Growth through Education. All entries should represent the topic in some way. The logo will become the emblem of the QEP and will be used on a variety of media for marketing purposes.

The logo:
テつキ should be describable (like the Nike テ「徭wooshテ「)
テつキ should be memorable
テつキ should be effective without color (i.e. when printed only in black ink)
テつキ should be scalable (i.e. effective when either on a billboard or a business card. The logo will be used on a variety of media.)
テつキ should work equally well both on the web and for print pieces
テつキ should not be overly complex
テつキ should represent the Warner University Quality Enhancement Plan- EDGE: Enhancing Digital Growth through Education

The schools mascot is the Royal (lion).

So, for all you artsy people... What do you think I could do?
Again, I am not looking for someone to do it for me. I just want some ideas. :)

Thanks! :D

You could do what they did at my old college and put a lion in a circle...

//www.greatamericanconference.com/images/2011/8/15/medium_East_Central_Oklahoma.jpg

LoL.

Or a flower with stem and all, and a book for the bud, to show that it's blossoming and growing.
Maybe have something digital related with it as well. 0s and 1s in a circle border around it, barely noticeable???? or something? I dunno.

This is the only thing I could think of...

It looks great on a college sweater!

Digital lion's head.

Take a lions head shape facing left (like your mascot) and turn it into a matrix of black dots on white background.

Forgive the sloppyness... I am no artist with a pen and paper...

The lion is going to be the same one as the lion that is on the top left of the Warner website. (Warner.edu)

Taking the matrix idea... how about this? Ill work with Photoshop when I'm on my computer later.

Fart - I love the idea but I fear that the people judging it will not like it.
Lol.

Eta - ill finish the background lettering in the real one this is just a rough idea.

Isnt the lion already a part of the school logo? I dont think you can use that exact image without permission. I wouldnt even use a lion since this isnt a logo for the school, but a logo for a project within the school. For example I work for a contractor who has it's own logo, but I also work for a division within that contract that also has it's own logo and they look nothing alike. I would play off the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), digital literacy, and edge. With the main focus on the slogan...EDGE: Enhancing Digital Growth through Education. The best way to brainstorm is scribble out 20 ideas and then narrow them down. That's if you really want that ipad!

Brain shaped matrix? with wording?
Satellite with wording on it?
tree/leaf sprouting technology?

so many ideas...just think harder.

BTW, I have a degree in Graphic Design so I'm not just blowing smoke up your kachoo ;)

Thank you everyone. I have a full month to finish this so I have plenty of time. This thread will be bumped here and there with new ideas and possibly some roughdrafts.

Thanks again. Keep the ideas flowing. :)

I am going to work on an approval to use the lion like Chinabun said. I may also use something else instead of it. I like the idea od matrix though. Very "tech-y" feel to it. :)

How about this? This of course is my first go at it. I will clean it up with the background. Took me roughly 10 minutes and most of it was cleaning up the Royal Lion.

Too complex - A logo should be simple, a single compact shape. There are three parts to this logo, the lion, the 'EDGE' and the background. It's more like the front page of a website.

Also, the background won't shrink. If you need to put that logo onto a letter head or shrink it down, the background becomes grey fuzz.

Good job on tidying up the lion though.

ETA: In fact, read through the 'the logo should be..' section in the instructions. It needs to tick all of these.

While it looks pretty the background is not practical and will make the logo less versatile. I suggest you simplify what you have. The finicky bits around the EDGE font are similarly not going to translate well on other sizes/mediums. Instead keep the font simple/bold. The lion looks very good but you don't need the shadow effect.

Slippy, the only thing I don't know about with yours is how it relates to technology. I like that logo though. Short sweet and to the point. I am going to email the professor that sent me the email to ask how many I can enter.

As for everyone's comments on the background, I thought about that... I agree with you that it probably won't work which is why it is just a roughdraft. It is mainly to get my creative juices going. ;)

I was first thinking of an iconic graduation cap being worn by an atom (nucleus with electron orbits).

Something like...

... probably says science more than technology, though. :-/

How about taking the school logo. Adding the word "EDGE" into the crown and using 1's and 0's (Like Matrix) for the mane. At work and no access to photoshop, but i could send you something later if you are interested. PM me.

How is this not the equivalent of hiring your grandmother to take your wedding pictures with her point & shoot? Why is the school not hiring a graphic designer for this?

Many schools want feedback from the students so that they can and will feel proud displaying a logo they took part in creating.

My grandmother is pretty proud of her photographs. That's not really an excuse for not having a professional design something. As someone who makes a living by design, this lack of public worth for my craft is bothersome. (Similar to: What do you mean you want to charge me $300 for using your photo?)

Not saying this pertains to the school but i'm sure there are plenty of cases where $$$ or a lack of $$$ plays a strong factor.

Also why outsource something you can do in house??
