Noticing that less than half of my comments are not being helpful, I had a look at what type of comments on the same photos would be considered helpful. I found that the vast majority of my 'unhelpful' comments are made to photographers who don't mark any comment as helpful. Maybe some people are not even aware of the possibility to do this? Or don't read any comments?

I think that most of the people here are aware of this option.
Around 2/3 of the comments a make are marked helpful and a asume that I mark around the same fraction of the comments I get helpful. But certain amount of the comments you get are just not helpful, just a short comment about how people like the image or if it meets the challenge but no explanation.

I comment as often as my time allows, and find that many photographers find my compliments "helpful" and my criticism "not helpful." Strange, huh?

Seems to be that case in may cases. best way to get a comment marked as 'helpful' is to say 'it rocks' or ' best pic i've seen'. To me, a comment like that is not helpful as it does nothing to improve my skills.

Comments i find helpful are 'i don't get it' or 'too grainy'. While they may not be constructive (as in 'to increas DOF use a smaller aperture') it does provide me with feedback that will make my entries more popular to the masses, which should make them better. Os is that my pics will be better, so more popular.

I also comment on as many pictures as I have time. The thing that irks me is that the majority of comments I receive, are either nonspecific, "weak photo", or simply "I don't like it" etc.

Yeah, I know that type of comment is not very helpful. I try to be specific in my comments (and I know I should be commenting more than I am now), but it always makes me feel a bit arrogant: as if I know how to take good pictures. Often I'm not even submitting because I can't come up with a good picture.

When there are 200-300+ to comment on it's often difficult to give full in depth critiques to all. The commenter has the option to give many short comments as to a few in-depth critiques. That is not always a bad thing. Unless of course they are rude. In the examples you gave there can be helpful/useful knowledge. Some people get infuriated that a person would dare tell them HOW to correct or improve their photos. They don't want to know how to make it better, just what you did and didn't like. It's a fine line and it's going to reflect peoples education, attitude, culture etc. Just take them for what they are. We don't want to discourage people from giving comments. They don't know who you are so try not to take it as a personal attack.
P.S. You can always post a shot here for comments if you don't get satisfactory remarks during a challenge.
