I'm just waiting on the 36mp, 360 degree, light field video camera. Seriosuly though, until [if] this technology matures it'll just be a gimmick that's maybe fun to play around with for 5 minutes, I can't see any real world advantage to it at this stage. |

I just read about an add-on lens for video-cams which records a continuous 360° panoramic video, which can then pan later while viewing. Should work for still photos too ... |

I can't help but think in a few years this will have advanced much further. I guess from the vendor's point of view that they need to be able to fund further development and so a usable product has been developed. If it takes off then they'll no doubt do very well and the technology will advance at a pace. |
For the first part of your comment-
They stated in another article earlier that they were approached by other major manufacturers and refused, that they wanted to keep it all in-house from the ground up. I thought this decision was sorta risky, since it's then necessary for you to hone your optics production/R&D, a field which is complex and already has extremely high quality goods.
The key will be if they find a big enough share of the market to remain viable. New technology doesn't come cheap, and I think a lot of its future will hinge upon attracting a consumer base. It's hard to say much at this point with such limited details, but it will be interesting in any case.

And that was exactly what was said by the huge group of film photographers when low resolution, clunky, noisy DSLRs came out... |

people think their phone camera is all they need so i doubt this will catch us, unless its incorporated into the phone.
also from the sample images on the site, the images look soft, however it may help all of us get clear pictures of our kids who we cant even capture in focus with the high shutter speeds our current cameras have! |

VERY cool. I'd definitely be interested if the price came down a bit. $400 is a bit rich for a "disposable" camera, if the battery can't be switched out. I can't imagine it will replace traditional photography. The image quality is not quite there yet. But it is so small that it would be a cool thing to tote about. |

It almost surely recharges through the USB connection -- it would be insane to through away expensive optics and electronic components. That would put it out of commission while recharging, however, though maybe it can shoot "tethered" in a studio setting.

Way to go -- looking forward to a review!

There's an iPhone version of the 360° panoramic lens I referenced earlier -- "only" $80 ...

The camera is rechargeable through the USB connection. A "fast" charger will also be available.
Shipping is supposed to start in the March/April time frame. When it shows up, I'll be happy to post a review. (i've always been an easy mark for, "Hey kids! Be the first on your block..." |

Just remember that if you play with cutting-edge technology you should be sure to have a good supply of bandages on hand. ;-) |

13 Lytro Photos That Will Make You Look Twice
Interesting. They present the photos, and we can select the focus points. No special software needed by the viewer, so it is imbedded in the presentation in some fashion. |
