A few weeks ago we were out shooting on a fairly cool breezy morning. I had the 300 mounted up and was trying to get some high-speed sequences. Things were good for awhile...

Then the D90 froze up. Looking through the viewfinder, saw only black, and an ominous flashing Error message on the display. Switched off camera, changed batteries and memory card. No diff whatsoever. Began to get panicky, the light was just coming up and I was missing freaking gorgeous shots, we had just started shooting. Turned off camera for a few minutes, switched it back on...

Thank gawd it came back to life and was able to resume shooting. But then again recently, this past week, with the 18-200 up it did exactly the same thing, when shooting on high speed. Not as badly as before but still got that scary Error message, which means the camera itself is truly f***ed in some way.

So looks like it's in for servicing, glad I got the 5 year warranty! Meanwhile a certain redhead (or 2) is rubbing his hands with glee cause it looks like gee gosh darn it, I'll have to shoot Canon for the 2 weeks or so while the D90 is getting serviced. Please don't hate me!!!

Noooooo......

But way back when, between the D40 and the D90, I DID borrow and shoot with a Canon 20D for a few weeks (thanks to RayEthier) and have to shamefacedly admit that some of those images are still on my homepage's top row. So I just have to do everything backwards to what I am used to doing with Nikon and I'll be just fine :-)

If you need the 20d just skip over to the house and tell my daughter that you are borrowing it... it is on the desk extension (left side) in my office. I can lend you either the 40D or 5D Mk II and the extension when I return from Oz and New Zealand at the end of the month.

Have a great day and happy shooting.

Look in the manual, either paper, or on line, and try doing a "Full Reset" . That may cure the problem.
Hope it's nothing too serious.

I did do a full reset the first time it happened, and knock on wood, it seemed to help. But with the same message popping up again and virtually the same problem, well, that's one more time too many for me. It's meant to signify an actual mechanical problem and I don't want to mess with it.

btw...I do have a Canon Powershot kicking around still, maybe I'll dig it up and shoot p&s for awhile ;-)

ETA: Much thanks for the offer on the 20d but think I'll wait for your return. Hope you're having a good time down there!

A similar thing happened to a Fuji S3 Pro that I had on vacation in Montana. Fortunately, I had a second one along. I thought about doing the reset the next day, and it fixed the problem. I agree though. If you are getting the err message when burst shooting, then there must be something not happy with either the shutter mechanism or with the processor, possibly over heating.
Another idea would be to clean the battery contacts with a pencil eraser, and/or try shooting a burst with a line power supply if you have one, to see if the err occurs. It could be loss of voltage due to a weak connection to the battery. Have you tried a different battery or battery pack?

What did the error message say?

@ Melon....yes, did try changing batteries first thing. made no difference til I did the reset.

@ Jopsy....flashing Error.

It is the high speed shooting that is doing it, i get the same when i am shooting fast. the memory card can only go so fast, i can get about 30 shots at 8 per second and then it stops and error message comes up. you will notice that at high speed, sometimes it will just stop, take a breath for 5 -20 seconds and then can continue. turn of IS, have smaller pics size. you shoudl be good after that

@ JulietNN...I know what you mean abiout the buffer filling up fast and the camera needing to take a breather, but it wasn't that this time. The shutter was locked up for a good 3-5 minutes, and stayed that way even after changing both card and battery.

Any updates?

If you looked through the viewfinder and only saw black the reason most likely is the mirror was stuck up. Even stopped all the way down most lenses will still allow you to see something.

On a side note I just got my D3s back from Nikon for shooting black frames and it was the mirror assembly and a solenoid for it. Nothing like a $375 repair to get you back on the road.

Which is why I got a 5-year warranty when I bought it, and am still planning to send it in for a workover, well under the warranty timeframe. Hasn't been dropped or immersed in water, which would void the warranty, so I figure it's worth the $40 shipping fee.

I can help with that.

Thanks snaffles, for the update. I'm happy that you got the extended warranty.

I saved about $1500 by buying used, it's a chance you take, however if you look at what it cost me and what I saved...I'm still a bit ahead on this one.

Good luck getting it repaired, Nikon has one of the worst procedures and communications systems I've dealt with. Canon and Olympus were both simpler and more responsive during the repair process.

I bought the D90 brand spankin new. It wasn't shooting black frames, it wouldn't even let me, period.

So I am willing to take the risks associated with sending off my #1 camera to Nikon Canada. It will probably go to Mississauga which is relatively nearby, and go from there.

And if I do end up getting screwed over, well then it's my fault for not listening to you! :-) And I will be all over them if they do mess with me, I don't take crap lightly.

Also, strictly fwiw...when I sold the D40, the girl complained that the onboard flash didn't work. Due to lack of disuse, I told her, as I never used it as doing so resulted in crap images.

I even offered to buy the camera back from her.

But, after whining to me that she was out $40 and a camera for 2 whole weeks...well...have never heard from her since. So it sounds like Nikon Canada pulled through for her. Otherwise I would have been out $440.
