I was about to update my iPhone to iOS5 but something stopped me. I don't love the iCloud concept. It bothers me that all my personal stuff will be stored in an Apple computer in North Carolina. Things I worry about
-Apple could use info or sell it
-Feds have easy access to your personal stuff
-Apple could make it hard to take your stuff if you switch to another system
-constant interaction with the cloud through home wifi could bog down my wireless–I have several devices at home
-run up my data usage through AT&T as we no longer have unlimited data plan
Is anyone else concerned, or am I overreacting? |

I'm uncomfortable about some of those things, and esp about how they are going to handle iTunes. I have a lot of music that's not mainstream slurp, and it also says that it may lose tunes that were previously in the iStore, but no longer are there. I am seriously considering being iGone when they switch away from Mobile Meh.

I agree with you.
Maybe I'm paranoid... but I never backup stuff on a remote server without any kind of protection/encryption.
It's even more important for personal stuff, even if I have nothing to hide. |

| i don't know what they are storing i have a stupid phone for a reason. my question is if apple's server gets hacked, which i'm sure some kid with no life will hack it at some point, exactly what information are they going to get from that server? if it's music that's one thing if it's your credit card info from you storing it on the web browser on your phone that's something different. but like i said i have no idea how it works. |

Oh I didn't know that. That's good, but I imagine a lot of the features of iOS5 are not going to work without a cloud account. |

No go for it. There`s lots of good stuff that will all work without icloud.

If these things worry you, maybe you should change you user name?
Seriously, iCloud is optional. Don't know if you're a MobileMe user now, but it's essentially MobileMe that actually works. |

| Meh...I don't plan on putting anything personal on Icloud anyway. Just Itunes music, apps, etc... |

By definition, the design of storage over the cloud does not normally mean it is all archived in one place (North Carolina) as you state. The content is stored over an array of storage servers located in a myriad of places. Are you suggesting that Apple is hosting all of its storage in one place?

I've not seen anything that won't work if you don't use icloud
also, it ONLY backs up when charging, locked and connected to wi-fi
You can also turn what backs up on and off, I have all email/contacts/calendar turned off as I already sync those to my gmail account ... one massive plus is finally syncing bookmarks from your pc wirelessly. You can go down and turn off each individual app from backing up under manage storage on the iphone.
Photostream may or may not be useful too, I'm undecided yet as it only seems to sync new photos and not all existing |

dont worry about icloud, you have a bigger concern with the cellphone providers selling your info.

| Well I hooked up to iCloud this afternoon. I just wanted to synch my contacts. It didn't do that but it synced my notes to my iPad from my iPhone. I also lost "find my iPhone" so I disconnected the cloud. I then deleted the notes on my iPad and I also lost them on my iPhone. Fortunately nothing that important. I know I can get them back if I restore, but it's not worth it. The iCloud is not for this cloud...may have to change my user name. |

I have the 4s with ios 5. Sync-ed once the contacts with the cloud, messed up and never used again. Still enjoying the apple phone. I do use sky drive and drop box to share large files. I always back up on my own computers and drives.
There are neat features on ios 5. Most I like the double click that brings up the camera for immediate use.
Happy New Year,
Tibi

I would be more concerned about Google than iCloud. Apple offer iCloud as an incentive to buy their hardware. Google offer their services purely to get your data to use it for advertising. |

iCloud is another Apple ripoff in my opinion. Content purchased from Apple is stored free. You pay for others, and you only get 5 gb. Microsoft offers their Live services such as SkyDrive for free...totally free...you get 25 gig of storage, it doesn't care if you are using a Mac, Windows based machine etc. and it's extremely fast, customizable and free. You can sync all your desktops and devices using Windows Live Mesh. Free..Free...Free.
