As referred to by the Planet 5D Blog, this is software to automate the AF calibration feature on certain Canons: I haven't tried this because I don't OWN either of those cameras, but he's supposed to be developing it for 7D now also. It's currently in Beta and free, but he'll be selling it later.

So is the idea that AF needs to vary with the lens?

Newer Canon bodies incorporate a feature for AF micro-adjustment. This can help to compensate for minor offsets in AF due to the "match" between a specific lens and body. The software aims to automate the optimization of that adjustment. Cool idea, will have to see how it works in practice.

OK that's what I thought. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I haven't owned enough cameras in my lifetime to know if the Canon feature is as good as it gets. I do go manual sometimes because it doesn't seem to quite be working out for me.

Let's be clear on this:

1. All camera bodies and camera lenses are produced to a "tolerance"; it's rare for anything to be exactly to specification.
2. Let's assume a range of tolerance of -3 to +3
3. This means in theory there can be a focal-plane discrepancy of 6 units between a given lens and a given camera.
4. Canon's micro-adjustments allow you to run tests to calibrate each lens to the specific body, and the body stores the information.
5. It's a tedious process.
6. This software supposedly helps automate that process.
