On Friday my hubby and I left to drive 5 1/2 hours to my sister's to spend Thanksgiving weekend. We almost made it (only 20 kilometres away) when we came upon an accident. When we got there we were about 15 cars behind the scene and the police were just arriving. We saw a tanker truck in the ditch.

At first I was just zooming in but then I walked up to the scene. The driver of the tanker truck was lying on the shoulder of the road, police were there by then. He didn't seem too injured physically.

By now you've seen the mangled car in the background. The paramedics were arriving and checking it for survivors.

They were also tending to the tanker truck driver.

Debris was all over the road. Someone told me there was a body in the road (I did see something there but it looked like a duffle bag, too small to be a body. I learned later it was a body part). The driver of the tanker truck was taken away in ambulance with minor injuries.

According to witnesses the car drifted across the center line into the path of the tanker truck (the driver of the car likely fell asleep, the passenger was probably asleep too). The truck driver tried to avoid them but could not. He drove completely over the car from front to back. There were body parts over the road and the road was closed for about 10 hours.

We could not get to my sister's place because that was the only way (it is the Trans Canada Highway, the only route). So we had to turn around and drive an hour in the opposite direction and stay in a hotel for the night. We made it to my sister's the next morning, thankful that we weren't the ones in the accident.

A terrible thing, I'm just glad to know it wasn't you or your husband! Your title had me worried.

The driver of that truck is not hurt, he just realized the two people in the car were vaporized. ( and definitely glad you were a few seconds late...)

I didn't get my license to drive until I was 19 years old... Not because I was lazy... Not because I couldn't pass the test... It was because I was scared of something like this to happen to me with someone in the car. To be completely honest, I was never afraid of crashing myself and me being alone in the crash I was more worried about if someone was with me or if something happened to someone else in their car.

This is one of my biggest fears today although I do drive now and every time I get into a car I make sure I am completely aware of my surroundings at all times.

I nearly cried at these images because it brings the fear back to reality for me.

Karen, I am glad it wasn't you but such a terrible thing should not happen to anyone. I'll be praying for the lost ones family and friends.

Karen, solid shots that show the destruction and it must have been awful to see it in person .. as others said, glad you weren't close enough to be collateral damage .. what a sad Thanksgiving for the victims (and I include the tanker driver and hope he can work again ) for all involved.

Couldn't muster courage to look at your pictures. So glad you're fine. I almost did not want to look at the thread.
Devastating experience.

That is a long monotonous and dangerous road. I'm glad that you and your family are safe. My daughter in law and grandson drove that road last summer, and I worried about them the whole time they were on that part of the trip.

Although the deaths are truly tragic, my heart goes out to the poor driver. What a horrid realization to live with. Glad you're ok Karen, but like mariuca, I cannot bring myself to look at the images.

Don't scare us like that!! Looking at the thread title, and then the creator made my stomach sink!

What a horrible accident. I feel so sorry for that truck driver. Even if there was absolutely nothing he could do (and it sounds like there wasn't anything he could do), he'll probably second guess himself for the rest of his life. I feel so sorry for the victims, but I feel just terrible for the truck driver.

I saw the aftermath of a fatal accident once, and it really sticks with you.

I took a look at this photo again and my stomach turned. One of my biggest fears in life is literally the same as this photo...

Wow...

Marko those drivers were elderly. You are young and alert.... this is not going to happen to you.

Thanks for your concern everyone. I could have taken a lot more photos but once I got close and realized there were fatalities I didn't want to take any more. I feel really bad for the tanker driver as well. And of course the victims.

Horrendous accident, Karen. I'm glad you weren't caught up in it. It's so sad to know that scenes like this play out daily all over the world.

marKo, you're much more likely to be burned or stomped to death by a giant radioactive dinosaur or in a village fire. Yes, I'm sure of that.

Glad you missed this, Karen. Also glad you had the wherewithall to snap some excellent photos. Did you submit any to the press? They're very impactful.
