I've made several stop motion videos in the past using a lightweight freeware. I had it on an old laptop that bit the dust, and now can't remember what it was called. I'm sure I posted the name of the software somewhere on these unsearchable DPChallenge forums to help someone else out.
In particular, I used it to make videos called, Wake Up Kids and Cork Floor Installation.
I've just installed Windows Live Movie Maker, no doubt along with some Windows spy and bloatware. It's so disappointing that the good old days are gone. I remember when I could search for something, find it, and download it. These days I seem to find lots of bullshit ads, and when I do find something that looks downloadable, it turns out to require some shadybastard 'downloader' to be installed before the download can happen. Screw that.

cnet was one of the offenders which wanted me to download through their own exe, which I think is shady. >:-(

OMG, Windows "Live" Movie Maker is even crappier than the original Windows Movie Maker. How the fuck do they make something so much worse!?!?

Not sure what you mean -- I've never had problems, but haven't been there much lately. AFAIK, they guarantee their downloads to be free of viruses/malware.
FWIW I used an old version of Adobe Premiere for this time-lapse.
If you've ever bought a stand-alone CD/DVD burner, they often come bundled with some software which might include video software. |

I took a leap of faith on cnet last night and tried "dubstep", or something like that. It was almost promising, but didn't seem to be able to import all of my photos... nearly 3,000.
So far, Microsoft live movie maker has done the best job, though it took about an hour to render, and then had the annoying side effect of putting the photo filename as a subtitle randomly on about half the photos, ruining the video it took so long to render.... and so is dead to me. I spent some time struggling to get the subtitles off, but am not willing to got through some 3,000 frames manually deleting them. >:-(
The most annoying thing to me is that this stuff used to be so quick and easy!
Why has life become more difficult?

What size photos are you importing? You should batch resize them to the size of the video frame (e.g. 640x480 pixels for traditional VHS format) before importing into video editing software.
Also, number them (e.g. 0001_Filename, 0002_filename2) so they'll import in the order you want to render them.

There's always this.
Time Lapse Camera
I actually bought one and i'm pretty happy with it so far.
Only one major design flaw that you can't see what you shooting. You have to power off the unit and then connect the drive to see what you are taking a picture of and then reset. |

I did that my second go-round. MS preserved the camera-given filenames, so I suppose it's reading them from metadata, but only when it feels like it about half the time.

FYI...
JPGVideo is what I was after.
What a pain in the arse that was, but it's finally over!
Expect a new thread from me on this in 2015. But I'll be even more rank then.

Another great freeware program for this is FFMPEG. It has a steep learning curve because its all command line based. But it has almost infinite flexibility. I used it heavily during most of the workflow on a few hollywood stop-mo films.

Coolio, do you have any of your stuff online to see?
As far as huge learning curve... I have better things to do with my time than learn! ;-)

| The studio is overly protective when it comes to their internal process. So I won't mention any movie names but lets just say that the main character was a little girl with bright blue hair and a search of my name on IMDB might return something. The second film is still in production, but should be out next year. |

Well, crap. The software couldn't handle ~4,000 frames, apparently, so I split it up and recombined...

Nice to know that feature films are being produced using freeware ... makes me even less likely to spend $10 to go see it though ... :-( |

I'm one of the first people to complain about studio spending practices and insane movie prices. It's one of the many reasons why I stopped working in the movie industry. But what they have to pay for software is insane. Sure they use a lot of open source stuff, but even with all the free software they still end up paying millions of dollars in annual license fees for some of the software used.
Nice video Slippy! glad you got it working. I haven't had a chance to look at yours Gaurav, my work blocks vimeo :/ |
