It was inthe local paper (beaver county times) that they attended church sat mar 20 at SS Peter and Paul and Rob hung around to chat to parishoners.

It is time for me to become papparzzi and get a candid shot or two of them? I saw Amber once driving down the road...I live only a few miles from her.

Nahh, i have better things to do.
On second thought, what are shots like this worth?

WOO HOO!

Just got word that my photo will indeed appear in the issue of People that comes out this Friday. The issue is the "April 19" edition, but will be on shelves on Friday, the 9th. Looks like I'll be buying quite a few copies of this baby :)

First, congratulations!

Next, make sure their contract doesn't specify that THEY get the copyright. Better yet would be that YOU provide the contract specifying the usage -- English language or worldwide, one issue of the magazine only, etc. It's a common ploy with newspapers and magazines to have you sign over your copyright. YOU should control it and your price should be based upon CIRCULATION and the AD RATE of the magazine. New York Times has a freelance rate of $150US (quite low) AND they want the copyright. They will share any future revenue that they generate, though. If you haven't sent this to the copyright office yet, I would do it post-haste! It's only $30US for an unpublished picture and then there can be no question about who owns the picture.

Again, congrats and get that puppy copyrighted!!!

Alan,

Nice shot and great website. Congratulations on getting this. Hope it opens up more doors for you to get your work out there.

Not sure but some American magazines have a Canadian edition and not all stories from the American issue are in those. Will keep a lookout for it nonetheless Alan. Congrats!!

I know this will sound like the babblings of an insane person, but this kind of thing wouldn't bother me in the least. I'm just not picky about copyright issues in most instances. If they had asked for the copyright, I would have said, "Sure."

For the record, there was no contract involved, and no mention of retaining exclusivity, or anything at all like that. They simply asked for the photo, told me they were going to use it and they told me to send them a bill for $X. And that's all fine by me.

If I made a living doing photography, I'm sure I'd feel differently, but it's a hobby. My love of photography is purely for the fun of it. I enjoy learning new techniques, and I love taking photos of interesting scenes and people. That's why I enjoy DPC, and that's why I have a camera. It's not something I do with an economic benefit in mind.

I do occasionally make money doing this, and that's cool. I even have the possibility of having a shot (not the one being used in People) being used for the cover of a book soon! I just think it's cool to have my work featured in these ways.

Does this make me nuts? Perhaps... but I don't think I'd enjoy photography as much if I did it any other way.

This is big. Once you've got a photo published in a magazine, especially a huge national magazine, it becomes easier to get published elsewhere.

I should mention that this wasn't something I had sought out. There were a couple comments from people wondering how I went about getting this published, and the answer is that I did *nothing*... they found me.

I've never really tried to get anything published -- I've just been lucky enough to have shots that people wanted to use for one thing or another.

A couple years ago they used a few still shots of mine on the "Craig Kilborn" show on CBS... and that was another case of just getting an e-mail from someone who wanted to use shots I had taken.

How did you get the job of being the webmaster? You live in the same town, right? I remember you talking about this the last time she was involved but I can't remember how you got the job.

Good luck Alan. Great photo of Amber and Rob. I'm going to have to go out and get a copy this week so I can say, I knew Alan before he became a famous People Magazine photographer =o)

Heh, I basically "made" it my job. I started the site in 2001, and got to be good friends with them along the way. The whole story is here in one of my episode summaries (I write smart-ass commentaries about each episode of Survivor for the site... this is from the episode in 2001 when she was booted off the show -- it pretty much explains everything):

//www.amber-brkich.com/watercooler/week11.shtml

PS -- I do live in her general vicinity. She lives about 10 miles from me. After the series is over next month, I'll have to share some photos of her that I took when we had a fondue party at my house on my birthday a couple months ago. We nearly had a fondue-related fire to deal with, and I have some funny shots of Amber as we were putting out the "blaze" on the dining room table...

Congrats Alan. Your approach to photography is well-thought-out and mature, your acheivements are based on talent without the help of excessive ambition. Admirable. Best wishes for more such sucesses in the future.

I have a question... you say they "found you" but how did anyone know you had this picture? Is it on your website somewhere or did someone hear that you had the photo?

It's on Amber's web site (which I designed), and it had also appeared in the Beaver County Times newspaper a few weeks ago.

Alan again congrats. I went searching on the People Magazine website to see if they had the photo there. I didn't find the photo but I did find a story on Amber and Rob.

Glad you guys spotted it! I bought my 75 copies on Friday (ok, I just bought two...)!

The local paper mentioned the shot in a story the other day, too:
