On the recently completed Abstract challenge we had 182 submissions, and 116 votes per image on average. Some of those votes came from non-participants, so at least one third of the people who had an image in the challenge did not bother to vote in the challenge.

Why not? Are abstracts too boring? Were there too many entries to vote on? Do you not vote in any challenge you submit to? I do not ask to shame or blame, I am just curious. Any brave souls out there willing to explain this to me?

I never submitted an entry, but did vote. I vote for every single challenge I enter, and try my best to vote on every other challenge.

I love abstracts.I did notice on the last day that I hadn't gotten around to voting on the whole challenge, so I made sure to finish before rollover (except for those of my WPL teammates).

It's not just the abstracts, however. Frequently there are fewer votes than entries. Just voting on everything is a huge time commitment. I don't always vote on every challenge, and not always the entire thing.

I find it exceedingly difficult to vote at all, and am naturally inclined merely to comment when moved. However I did vote on all but 3 of the abstract entries - those 3 leaving me so stymied that I couldn't even give a number much less comment, which is hardly fair: possibly they were worthy of 10's or 1's, but life isn't fair especially when it's a matter of justice by number.

A challenging challenge to enter AND to vote on.

I notice that over the years I have voted 112,000 times and received 136,000 votes. I don't have any personal code that keeps me from voting on challenges I'm in, which is a good thing since I more or less enter them all, but I don't always manage 100% voting anymore, and I'm not sure why. I think I reached a state of voting burnout a lot faster than I'm reaching photographer burnout.

Brennon, for me the of votes given and received is almost equal. I noticed by the time of the turnover that I did not vote on the abstract (too busy to clean up my moaning and groaning computer). Nevertheless, my number of comments posted is twice as big as the one received.

I noticed that voting was low on Friday and noted so in the thread. It did pick up but not to the point of other recent Sunday challenges. I believe it was the topic. With WPL running, team members felt the need to enter but didn\'t care to vote because they didn\'t like the topic.
It\'s a shame, really.

I applaud Posthumous, however, for his very large number of art gallery awards and astute comments on the topic. I encourage anyone who feels they didn\'t get enough feedback from this challenge, myself included, to go have a look at the posthumous thread here.
Also, take a look again at the gallery. There is a lot of interesting stuff there - sometimes a second or third look is needed before an image clicks. Abstract is not so easy but if we can learn to appreciate the topic, maybe next time it comes along there will be more participation. It really is fun.

I personally hate voting for the Abstract challenges, but I always vote, so I muddle my way through them. It just seems like there's a fine line between a "good" abstract and a "bad" abstract, and what makes one good or bad? I have to ask myself if the end result gives me a pleasing array of colors, or a unique texture, or if it's just a mysterious blob.

I dunno... I just find myself struggling to vote on those particular challenges not knowing whether I'm voting "correctly."

I think that Penny hit it on the head. Abstract photographs are an acquired taste. I happen to love them. That puts me in a minority, I've come to find. The number of entries may have been greater than we'd expect because of WPL.

Beyond whether or not you like abstracts, I think some people find it hard to vote on them, as Alan described. I used to feel that way myself, but now it's easy and fun for me. An abstract is not silent. Instead of representing things, it suggests things. So I vote highest for the most evocative image, or in the case of my personal blue ribbon, an image that is just stunningly beautiful.

evocative, stunningly beautiful... we grab for words as the image grabs...

I have a hard time voting for abstract pictures because I don't have a clear scale of what I am voting for.
In another challenge, it is easy for me to see which are the good images, and which are the bad images, but for abstract I don't know which ones are good and which are bad. I try to vote based on how I connect with the picture, but that varies so much based on what mood I am in while voting.

Nevertheless, I did vote...and I guess I am not terrible at it, seeing as many of my 8s and 9s landed in the top 10

I'll chime in here, too. My votes received is still less than those given, so I'm good there.
When I do vote on a Challenge I tend to do 100% unless I'm in a team, then, of course it's +- 97%
Abstracts? Like some others, I love 'em. I'll spend far more than twice as much time in a Modern Art museum as in a traditional one.

My criteria is fairly simple. Would I stand in front of this in a gallery and admire/enjoy it? If so, high number, if not, well,
let's turn to the next one, please.

Subjective? Yeah, it is.

I voted in this challenge, and even bumped quite a few up in the dying minutes before rollover.
