On a totally different note, does anybody else find it hard to keep themselves from saying "that looks like a _________"? I know these are abstracts and I SO want to view them just for what they are but my brain keeps wanting to sort them out as reality. |

I entered this as I love abstract, but to say that something has to be unrecognizable to be abstract is insane. The last two abstract challenges has very recognizable objects as subject matter and they ribboned! As for people voting low because they don't care for abstract, then why the hell are they voting??!! If they already don't like something before they even start, they are not going to be in a good mindset where something would impress them. This is a good exercise, but poorly defined in that it is contradictory saying you cannot recognize the subject matter. And abstract does NOT equal blurry in every case!
Off my soapbox...going to go see what my still downward spiraling score is and then do something fun.
BTW, I agree that the voting will be along the same lines as those abstract shots in a regular challenge. Same pool of potential voters! As previously proven, not a popular topic here. :) Hope everyone is having a nice Tuesday (unless you are way ahead of central time)! :~) |

Yes. So now I think I was insane to enter... Possibly the only photo that would perfectly fit the description would be a photo of nothing. But wait, my head is spinning. NOOOOOO, THE GREAT NOTHING............. |

The sad part of the unrecognisable controversy is that we ought to be looking at every image as an abstract, at least partly. Every Image leached of meaning is a sequence of colors and lines, forms and sequences. No matter how well an image responds to a challenge, it also will be judged as an abstract, and will only be truly successful if it works on both levels.
We have been tasked to make an object unrecognizable for this challenge, but abstracts are in every image, abstraction is a process of viewing any image or object in it's pure form stripped of its baggage of meanings and associations. Then simply see, we view only what is in front of us, we are viewing an abstract. |

I like this definition.

Then, someone thought my photo was too unrecognisable. I still don't know know what to make of that comment. |

There are a couple of categories that would fit this description: EXTRACT and MACRO. | I suspect my confusion comes from definition of abstract in painting. Maybe it does not apply to photography.
PS EXTRACT and MACRO describe technique not style of photography in a conceptual sense. MACROs can be either abstract and realistic. I am not sure what EXTRACT means. |
Definition:
(noun) - Abstract art can be a painting or sculpture (including assemblage) that does not depict a person, place or thing in the natural world - even in an extremely distorted or exaggerated way...

One comment made me think. The person figured it out and I can tell that s/he was pretty proud to say so. I don't know why it matters since I already know it anyway.
For me it wasn't about creating an unsolvable puzzle, but to create an abstract photograph. There's a difference you see. It's not bingo and you are not some old lady.

When I send an email I can choose to attach a little red flag so that, hopefully, it will be noticed.
This post needs a little red flag! |

how can u tell what the votes are? |

|

There is a spreadsheet you can download and then plug in the number of votes and your score and it shows the average for the last vote(s). I'll see if I can find it! And if you are really bothered, lol, you can always go see who's online at the time. (I didn't even know that existed until about a month ago and I've been here for 5 years! ) :P |
