Honest Critique Requested
The critique club checkbox doesn't seem to be working for quite a while now.
Many of us are appreciative of the comments we recieve. But that's because most of us only get the most tactful politically correct comments from the nicest people on dpc.
Some commenters are brave enough to be honest in pointing out some flaws in photo they are commenting on, but half the time their comments land on photos taken by people who take it the wrong way. Some of us may have a lot to say about a photo, but for fear of being taken the wrong way, we just choose to keep the comments to ourselves.
So here's a win-win solution. If you want people to know that you are ok with a no-holds-barred comment during voting, prefix your title with HCR:
It means you are requesting an honest critique. So for example you have a photo and you want its title to be "Twelve Sunflowers", make it "HCR: Twelve Sunflowers".
For the commenters, take note that the photographer is requesting for a critique, not bashing, if possible.
Annonymity will be preserved if more than one person (me) will do it in the next challenges.
Anyone else on board?

It's been tried before, I'm afraid. I did get a larger number of comments than usual on the one I tried, but I think I was the only one who did it, after someone else suggested it. Perhaps everyone was waiting to see if everyone else did it.
I've made the suggestion a few times that a useful upgrade to the site would be checkbox to use when uploading a challenge entry that would indicate to the voter if critiques and suggestions were desired.

Glad to know others have also been interested on this in the past. So in your case it was a wait-and-see. Maybe we should do this again, but we have to decide when, which particular challenge as a starting point. For now, let's just see if we can gather enough participants, then we can give this a go.
Your suggestion is much better, but for now without that upgrade yet, we can settle with an indicator in the title. |

As a member of the Critique Club, I want to first explain that the Critique Club functions as a group of volunteers who spend their time providing in depth critiques of photos which people have requested to be critiqued. Once you check that box, you are added into a queue, and we each randomly request the next image for critique. Once the image has completed voting for a week, it is discarded from the queue, which is refilled with images from the new images. Because we get many images per cycle, it is not always possible for us to get to all of them. Admittedly, I know we have been slacking lately (I know I have been). For many of us, we get burned out, having spent large amounts of time on photos but receiving no recognition for efforts (I tend to spend around 15-30 minutes looking at each one, and writing a response). I can't speak for all members, but I know this has on occasion been the case for me.
However, if you had several photos that you requested a Critique Club comment for, which went unheeded, I would be more than willing to provide my own for you, after the fact. Just send me a PM and I'll get to them in the next couple days.
Sorry about us not being able to get to your image :)
ETA: Also, you might be interested in my short lived thread of With All Due Respect...

thanks. The Critique Club is one of the nice things we have here on DPC. We totally understand if you guys are preoccupied with other stuffs. Like you said, you are volunteers. And we appreciate your work. The thing is, you will be pre-occupied with stuffs, and there is not much of you who are active nowadays. In addition, we only get one comment from you guys, coz like you said, the request for critique gets taken out of the queue once one of you had responded.
It would be better if we can expand from that. The request for critique becomes visible not only to you, but to the rest of the community as well. Those who are anticipating critiques on their work may get more than one critique, from different perspectives, which is better.
Another good thing about this proposal is that the commenters get to do their volunteer work without having a tasklist of "to do" comments. So when you feel like slacking to give out some critiques, you won't need to apologize. |

As a member of the critique club and one who has not been very active recently. I will say that the biggest reason I stopped writing critiques was a lack of feedback from the people whose images I spent a great deal of time critiquing. If you ask for a critique and get one, know that the person spent 30 minutes to an hour working on and thinking about your photo. You don't need to prostrate yourself at their feet, but a simple pm saying "Thanks" would suffice. |

Or even just marking the comment as helpful would be a start.
