You knew I'd be the one to reply? What does that mean? I rarely , if ever reply to a score contriversy. I currently have a 4.5 and a 5.07 score. I tend to agree that separate contests may drag scores down.....but it is across the board. How could it be that you are affected and others are not?

So since the WPL stared the average vote on 7 challenges has been 5.659714 the August challenges that lined up (no freestudy, no expert editing) with the September challenges in the count for WPL the average in 7 challenges was 5.67029. So you are right, scores have dropped 0.01631. I would not have noticed the shift, but yes scores have dropped. |

wow. I guess as others have said, my image is recognisable as an object so perhaps that's what's really getting it the "beyond bad" votes. |

Got 3 comments and then realised why it is doing so badly. I tried for it not to be recognisable but the people here are so clever and their sight so good, you cannot fool them! It only underlines the fact that I must never underestimate DPc'rs |

I mean this to be constructive, not negative, so please lay off, happiness police: How many more examples of poorly worded challenges can there be before some more care is put into it?
"Unrecognizable" is a perfectly good challenge theme. "Abstract" is a perfectly good challenge theme. But to call the challenge "Abstract" and then define abstract as unrecognizable, is misleading and confusing, and is guaranteed to cause controversy.
Same as it ever was. |

Hmmm.... let's see. From some of the comments, if an image is abstract, but the voter thinks they might know/guess the object, they vote it down as DNMC. I disagree with that interpretation of this challenge, as many good abstracts could be guessed. The environment at DPC has turned hostile. Well, at least slamming low votes on good images for petty reasons must make some people feel good. |

abstract is a funny concept for photographers, it seems, who feel either that the definition is "lines and shapes in vivid color" or some play on the "guess what this is" game. Not saying mine is a good entry, hovering with a 4.5 score- but shit- the very definition of abstract photography required pushing the bounds a bit- not just a super sharp crisp beautifully rainbow-colored macro shot. There are other options. |

If this was an eye candy challenge and had the same voting pattern, I'd be tempted to agree with you. I think the problem with this challenge is plain and simple: there are many people that don't appreciate abstracts. That's why the majority don't do well in regular challenges. Even though the challenge is abstract, people are probably still voting according to their tastes. If you look at the voting distribution of an abstract in a regular challenge, it probably looks remarkably similar to the distribution here.
I was hoping that there would be a little more open-mindedness because it's an abstract challenge. But if people don't like abstracts, it's hard for them to fake it. :) |

You have rated 183 of 183 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 1 images (1%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.1257.
This was a hard challenge to vote.
"What do you think of this blurry mess? What about this other blurry mess? What about this colorful blurry mess?" :-D Haha
Some really good images, I will likely go raise some scores and leave comments when time allots. |

Well can you raise mine, it's going down with every single, single vote......lol
You could'nt get more abstract than mine, well maybe. Have one great comment, wish someone else would comment. Scores OK, just don't like the drop every time I update. Is anyone else having the same problem..........ok enough griping.

Every person who responded to your post did so respectfully, and sometimes that included disagreeing with you. However, disagreeing with you does not mean any of them did not like you expressing your opinion.
Sounds to me like it isn't them that have the panties in a wad. |

I voted the entire challenge, and my average vote was in the high 5 range. There were many recognizable objects, which had an abstract quality. In that case I voted on a subjective basis, with a slight penalty for DNMC. As for the blurry messes, there was no way to evaluate them other than subjectively -- did I like the colors and find the shapes pleasing. FWIW, I'm in a master class of fine arts photography, and our teacher also defines "abstract" as being unrecognizable. |

It would be great if those who recognize real objects and therefore hand out DNMCs would offer a category the image fits according to them. I would be very interested what they think these images are.
PS I think there are different types of abstraction. Some take a small part of an object making it impossible to identify while others take groups and pieces of real objects and arrange them in an abstract manner. To me the image has to be looked as a whole - does it represent reality directly in its entirety?
PS2 My image is going to be DQ'd (I asked for it). Once that happens I will throw it in for discussion. I'd like to understand what is considered abstract and what is not, and if not what is it?

There are a couple of categories that would fit this description: EXTRACT and MACRO. |

Far from a winning entry, but not bad, considering all this controversy. |

There are a couple of categories that would fit this description: EXTRACT and MACRO. | I suspect my confusion comes from definition of abstract in painting. Maybe it does not apply to photography.
PS EXTRACT and MACRO describe technique not style of photography in a conceptual sense. MACROs can be either abstract and realistic. I am not sure what EXTRACT means. |
