I just ordered my first smartphone - the Droid Bionic - and there was an option for the GPS service and nav app for $20/month - I think I know the answer to this, but can you have/get a GPS service or app cheaper or free for this phone or without going through Verizon?
I just don't drive around much and I never get lost, so I am having a hard time justifying $20/mo. However, there have been times when it would have been nice to have. In fact, there are a lot of features they charge so much extra per month that I would like, but only use occasionally. Sure would be nice if they offered a per-use price and capability. |

VZ Navigator? Total crap. Google Maps is great at navigation - and the GPS is hardware... Try it without first for sure, then if you find some crazy reason you think you need the extra crap turn it on later.

Not sure about your service area, but Verizon here has a 1 day option for lite users. You can get it when you need it. |

i have the droid x2 and use the maps app that came with the phone. it handles directions and real time this-is-where-you-are decently. as it has more functionality than what i've explored or experimented with, i haven't bothered with any of the pay-for apps. the only drawback i've had is that it eats the battery, necessitating keeping it on a charger while driving. |

Not that the paid app will make any difference on battery life... |

+1, I only use the free app that came with my Droid X. My only gripe is it will sometimes choose a route which I know is longer, So I will go "my way" and the "time remaining" will drop accordingly after the "recalculating". I wish it would just choose the shorter way. Must be choosing shorter distance (not necessarily shorter time) or it might take traffic into consideration... not really sure.
reminds me of a quote:
"There is no such thing as a short cut, if it was actually better it'd be called "The Way". |

I can't see how any company gets away with SELLING the tax payer funded GPS signal. I know there must be some convoluted way Verizon gets away with this silliness but I haven't figured it out.
So....NO....use the Droid\google option. I've been using it for 2 years. Works perfect.

I have the original droid and it is pretty good ...even today. I know that Bionic is way better than mine. I think it has the Super Amoled screen which is a big difference.

Yeah, that phone makes me wish I stayed with Verizon. I'm using the Photon from Sprint, just wish there was a laptop dock thing for mine. |

They're not selling the GPS signal, they're selling the maps, traffic notifications and routing services that use the GPS data.
That's not to say you should pay for any of that stuff. |
