I worry that breathing the acetone fumes during aplication will kill enough (of any remaining) brain cells to negate any such advantage ... :-(

It's especially worrisome since he also painted the tips of his noseplugs just before he stuck them in.

Well, better acetone than cyanoacrylate ...

I just had an idea for an evil plan.

I'm hunting through craigslist and kijiji for people in the area with free logs. There is also the problem of getting the logs back to my house if they are too big for a Mazda CX7.

I just found a help wanted ad for a delivery person.

So I go and get the job driving a big delivery truck, go get my logs and bring them home, then quit... thanks for the gas!

A truck with one of those electric, lifting platforms at the back would be nice. It would also be nice if I had an assistant.

Place an ad on Craigslist for an assistant-- make that "Intern" so you don't have to pay them.

Sweet!

Might as well place an ad for a hooker, too. (also use the term "intern")

All this aside...I have to admit that when I saw your FB pic, I didn't click, so no close-up. It looked like you had taken a pen and *gone back to your Asian roots*, rofl! I guess I REALLY need to watch you closer.....

Make sure the intern has a truck!! A big truck!

Instead of wasting all that overhead making logs that resemble things, just sell the darn logs!!

Now go return your chainsaw and get your money back so you can pay your intern's gas!!

Just got through monitoring the crew that took this Pecan tree down in San Antonio. I should have saved some of it for you.

Wood any of this worked for you?

You mean there are no utility poles in your neighborhood? Next time there's one of those nasty storm-fueled power outages, do your civic duty and go help clear the "debris" ...

In the video i was sure when you took the saw up out of the frame when you got it running that you were going to have a squeeze bottle of ketchup ready and spray it all over your legs as if you had done a woopsy!

We expect certain things from you Slippy!

I got a voice mail last night from one of the tree services I got in touch with looking for logs. The guy said he had a really gnarly piece of cedar with a nice, big burl. He sounded pretty excited about it. I phoned back this morning and he asked me what I was going to make out of it. I said I wasn't sure, I'd have to see it first, and that I've never done any chainsaw carving before. He hesitated and said that this log was already spoken for by a carver up north... Oh shit, I got filtered out for being a newb! Haha!

I also got an email from my bro-in-law last night that there was a big tree cut down by the golf course. I was there just after 9:00am and the timing was perfect because a grounds crew guy was there loading some of it into a trailer. He helped me get a big one into my car, I brought it home and went back and three grounds guys loaded another big one up for me. Bought that home and went back and talked to the guys who'd finished clearing everything away. They said I could go around to the back of the course and take what I wanted. Not easy by myself, but I got a pretty big one and a few smaller logs.

The big ones are 18" and 18.5" in diameter, not counting the bark. :-)

They are DECEIVINGLY HEAVY ! My forearms are bruised and I even bruised and scraped my chin somehow.

I'm no wood expert, can anybody I.D. these, I think there are two different types.

Looks and awful like my Sugar Maples outside, but I'm not an expert either. I do like trees though. LOL.

Besides IDing the type of wood, I suggest doing some research into the need to dry or "season" the wood before you start carving it, to avoid later warping and splitting.

Good point. I'm not sure what I'll do about drying. I heard a guy say that using a propane torch to burn the surface prepares it well to accept stain, after a sanding. The wood is going to split, though. You can make a deep, vertical cut down the back to try to help relieve stress, and hopefully avoid splits at the front. But the fact of life is that it's going to split, and the splits should have stain applied.
