I've got a bunch of family movies on DVD, I want to take the best chapters, trim them down, and save them to some format that'll be easy for other people to play, or at least easy for me to burn onto DVD.

At the moment, my process is;

1) I'm using Handbrake to get chapters from the DVD into M4V files
2) Then I use Quicktime to trim the clips down. Quicktime saves as MOV
3) Then I'm using Smartconvertor to save as MP4

Unfortunately, some of the files won't play on my XP box, which indicates they're not in a good 'universal' video format.

So, can anyone recommend software for OSX, or even an easy method which will let me grab clips from a DVD and save them in MP4 format (or whatever would be a 'good' format for viewing on PC or burning to DVD, file size isn't an issue)

Okay, not to worry. I've downloaded Hewbo video convertor which seems to do a better job of converting to mp4. So I think I'll use quicktime/mov or whatever for trimming the clips, as long as I output to mp4 as the final step (which seems to be the 'best' format for what I'm doing)

I've always found video editing and formats to be really hit-and-miss. And least with photography we only have to worry about jpg... and raw.

I thought iMovie was really good for stuff like that, and you can also combine them easily and save back to a recognisable format. It should have come pre-installed on the Mac when you bought it.

Yeah, I was trying that but got stuck on a file format issue - It was importing some .mov files fine, but other .mov files were greyed out.

I'll take another look (actually, I've nearly finished the job now using the method I described in my first post, but with Hewbo as the convertor)

Okay, I finally ended up using SimpleMovieX, which is like QuickTime Pro but with better editing features; //simplemoviex.com/SimpleMovieX/index.var

Once I had the clips edited and merged, and the chapters titled, then I saved as .mov and imported into iDVD. There I burned the DVD.

The problem with iMovie is that it doesn't let you insert chapter markers. And you can't do it in iDVD either. The only way to add chapter markers is to use a tool like SimpleMovieX (I think there's some workaround in GarageBand, but I'm not going there)

I can't believe something as simple as this has taken me three days of trial and error. Not to mention the weirdness involved in converting between video formats and re-encoding etc.

Oh, for Linux users, //www.openshot.org/ does something similar, and is definitely worth a look (but again, doesn't allow me to put chapter markers! grrr)
