I know there's a "last book read" thread -- but many of those aren't really book club fodder.

Any suggestions for good reads for a book club (10 females...)

Thanks!!

(need it by tomorrow morning, after that it's moot)

The Help, is excellent

I'll try to remember the books we read in a book club I was in a couple years ago.

What makes "book club fodder"?

My daughter is in a similar book club and she lent me "The Book Thief" by Markus Zuzak after they'd done that. It was a good read, and unusual. I'll try to come up with more suggestions shortly.

okay here is the list of the books we read (well the ones I liked anyway):

Memoirs of a Geisha (one of my all time favorite books by the way)
A Thousand Splendid Suns
The Secret Life of Bees
The Help
The Hunger Games

And if you want something that is a lighter read and with a bit of humor try these:
Can you keep a secret (liked this one best)
Confessions of a shopaholic

All of these would be excellent for an all women book club. The hunger games is a little bit different from the rest but I don't know anyone who has read it and didn't like it.

I can second the titles I put in bold above - excellent books! I haven't read the Hunger Game but will add that to my list.

Reading Lolita in Tehran, by Azar Nafisi is another I'd recommend.

I keep a simple log of what I read - title, author and date I finished reading. I just consulted that and two things struck me.
Firstly, before I joined DPC in 2008 I was reading about a book a week. Since then I'm lucky to read a book a month.
Secondly - and this is scary - lots and lots of those books listed don't so much as ring a bell.

Hello Wendy,

I have been in my circle of friends meeting for Book Club for a few years now. Here is a sample of some of the -->

readings that are coming up on on list

The Paris Wife by Paula McLain (I enjoyed it)
Blood, Bones, and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton (found it interesting)
The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland (I loved it and have read it twice in the past)
Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier (Love learning about historical woman)
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Past reads from Book Club I would recommend

Little Bee by Chris Clive
I Elizabeth by Rosiland Miles
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
A Pearl in the Storm by Tori McClure
One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd
Moloka'i by Alan Brennert
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruis Zafon
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
My Father's Secret War by Lucinda Franks

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson (excellent book once you get past the details of what burn victims go through - the mini stories are beatiful....you have to read it to see what I am talking about)

The Passion of Artemisia: A Novel by Susan Vreeland
The Little Giant of Aberdeen County by Tiffany Baker

Other book reads I recommend:

The Forgotten Garden: A Novel by Kate Morton

I have a few more but have to step away for a while will be back with more book list recomendations

Suite Francaise, by Irene Nemirovsky. Published posthumously (!must be good). about the evacuation of Paris and the occupation in the countryside. Semi autobiographical. Not a false note anywhere. Available in paperback.

Back with some more recommendations

Past Book Club reads that had good discussion

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Wit by Margret Edson (yes it is a play but was excellent as was the movie done with Emma Thompson)
Pope Joan: A Novel by Donna Woolfolk Cross

Alice I have Been: A Novel by Melanie Benjamin ( I never knew the Inspiration for Alice in Wonderland was from drawn from a young girl)

The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson by Mitch Albon
Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alverez (based on the true story of about the three Mirabel sisters and their fight to overthrow the Dominician Republic dictatorship in the 1960's. Excellent read)

Demolished Man by Alfred Bester (Loved how surprised many of the ladies enjoyed a "science fiction' book. This book won the first Hugo Award for Science Fiction almost 50 years ago. Mostly a detective novel with human interest society story - in a world policed by telepaths how does one commit the perfect murder and get away with it and if caught what is the punishement.....)

Still Alice by Lisa Genova (a well crafted realistic portrait of early onset Alzheimer's disease. Excellent read)

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer ( Loved it!
The Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evens
The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle
The Nanny Diaries: A Novel by Emma Mclaughlin and Nicola Kraus

Other reads that I have read that I recommend
Trans-Sister Radio by Chris Bohjalian
The House at Riverton: A Novel by Kate Morton
The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith
The Borgia Bride: A Novel by Jeanne Kalogridis
I, Mona Lisa by Jeanne Kalogridis

Interesting books on my "to read" list that might be good material for book club

Clara and Mr. Tiffany: A Novel by Susan Vreeland
The Hangman's Daughter by Oliver Pötzsch
Room: A Novel by Emma Donoghue
Left Neglected by Lisa Genova
The Language of Flowers: A Novel by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
The Sorcerer's Apprentices: A Season in the Kitchen at Ferran Adrià's elBulli by Lisa Abend
Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale by Carolyn Turgeon
Sunflowers by Sheramy D. Bundrick

Just to make sure this suggestion ^ doesn't get overlooked.

Be prepared for much giggling and some attempts at very bad poetry ;-)
