I was intrigued until I found that it is not compatible with my Manfrotto tripod heads...oh well.

It's only $79 now.

I always leave a Manfrotto base plate on my cameras so I don't have to screw one on each time I want to use my tripod. By this company standardizing on a different base plate, I can't do that and use this system. I'd have to either change tripod heads or switch out base plates each time I wanted to use a tripod or monopod.
It probably sounds petty but its a big deal to me.

from their web page: "What types of tripods does Capture work with?
The camera connection plate that comes with CaptureĆ¢„Ā¢ is designed with a geometry that will fit into any Arca-Swiss-style tripod heads. This includes tripod heads by brands like Wimberly, Kirk and Really Right Stuff (RRS), all makers of high end gear. Additionally, Capture is compatible with JOBY's GorillaPod Focus and GorillaPod Ballhead X.

Tripod compatibility was a major consideration in the design of Capture. With such a wide range of tripod formats available, it was impossible for us to design a single base plate that fits all tripod head types. Arca-Swiss is often regarded as the golden standard for high-quality tripod connection systems. Arca-Swiss geometry is simple and logical, and Arca-Swiss-style heads have been widely used by professionals an amateurs for over 20 years. Certainly, photographers loyal to Manfrotto, Bogen, and Gitzo will argue otherwise, but Arca-Swiss is without question a brand which sells very high quality tripods."

Even though I am a Manfrotto user, I don't question that Arca-Swiss is a high quality tripod brand. It just isn't what I use so this doesn't do me any good. I wish somebody would come up with an easy to use system like this that isn't dependent on a specific mount.

It's VERY similar concept to the spider - maybe that would help but I suspect not since you need their thingi on the bottom of the camera....... I have been thinking about the spider for a while as I never found a strap I love..... might try the blackrapid versions, will see.

I just received this today. So far, so good. Fits my tripod directly, is compatible with my camdapter handstrap system, and looks like I won't be using pesky straps, even the black rapid straps which were not too bad, but still annoying. It feels really solid and well made, and the camera is really locked in there. There is a knob you can twist to lock it in completely, so that pushing the release button does nothing, for those times where you won't be using the camera, and want it REALLY secure. The weakest link will now be the belt/buckle, so you'll want a really solid belt and a strong buckle (no web belts with only a clamp on friction buckle)

It holds my d7000 with battery grip and 24-70mm (a fairly hefty combination) very solidly.

Do you have any longer lens combinations you could check it out with? I ask because I wonder how well it would work with my 80-200... seems like it might be awkward on a belt.

ETA: For those who are considering this or the Spider, there are also the Cotton Carriers

Sorry, that is my heaviest/longest lens right now. Another small plus: when not in use (on a belt or strap) the belt clamp portion "stores" nicely on the mounting plate, camera is still easy to handle. So far, I am liking this thing pretty well.

Is there anything that made you lean towards this instead of the Spider?
09/28/2011 03:59:28 AM · #16
Price, for one. The prongs on the spyder for another. And this is both arca compatible and works with my camdapter handstrap. Plus, you can mount the camera in any orientation, so you can mount it lens up, it stays in place for a lens change.

You can turn a knob and it is completely locked, so an inadvertent (or theft motivated) press of the release button will not release the camera.

I only just got it, of course, won't get a chance to use for real until Saturday in a long duration shoot situation. But so far I am impressed.

Yeah, understandable that your impressions as of yet are limited, just curious.
Would you be willing to check back in after you had used it a bit? Your setup is similar to what I use typically (D300+grip+28-70) but I use my 80-200 a good deal too.
The only thing I'd be concerned about is the stability of the plate for tripod use, since that's a decently heavy setup. I use Acratech plates because they're all shaped for the base of whatever I'm using and provide a more stable hold without having to REALLY CRANK DOWN the mounting screw, but the Capture plate lacks such lips.

I'm looking for a system for hiking now...I was about to order a cotton carrier but I was wondering how this has worked out for chromeydome or anyone who has one...

Also, love to hear your experiences with any such system. Though I probably need to order pretty soon!

I actually backed there clip and leash & cuff and love them both. Great feel, easy to use and overall a 10 out 10 from me.

It can get tiresome though with a 70-200 but it still gets the job done
