I have just got my new 7D, charged up the battery for a few test shots but the slot for the memory card looks way to big for my memory card i use with my 500D. Is it a different card I need for the 7D??

Well yes I have and it says CF card, What I dont understand is, is a CF card different to my existing card which I call a memory card. ?

quick googling of 500d memory card type and 7d memory card type says your 500d uses SD cards, and the 7D uses compact flash cards. These are not interchangeable/compatible, and yes, the CF card is physically larger than an SD card. So you will need to get some CF cards. I think there may be some CF adapter cards that accept SD cards, but I have never used any, cannot guess as to whether they work well or not.

Enjoy your new camera!

ETA: you can probably score one fast at Target, Best Buy, even Walgreens tomorrow (since you will want to use your new camera asap!) but probably you will want to just get one to "tide you over" as you can probably find both better quality, higher speed ones online for better prices. I'm partial to sandisk products when it comes to memory cards, myself, but there are other brands to consider, too.

Thank you chromeydomeI just needed confirmation of the fact that the cards are different. Not had much experience with these things. Best go get one so I can start shooting. :]

I did an "ETA" to my post below on just that topic while you were posting this... :D

Don't try to put the little card in the CF slot. There are a bunch of tiny wire pins at the bottom and if they get bent, it's bad. Seriously bad.
ETA, Enjoy your new baby!

Congrats on your new 7D. I love mine, and I'm sure you will too when you get used to it.

What type of card would you recomend. as said before I dont have much experience with any of this. Was looking at the sandisk extreme 60mb/sec. Any thoughts?

Sandisk is great. I have a 16 Gb Sandisk Extreme 60mb/sec card and it's excellent with great FPS (Frames Per Second). Definitely won't go wrong with one of these cards.

As great as this card is..and fast it's only a UDMA 5 card. You can get even faster transfer rates with a UDMA 6 or 7 card....if you can afford the prices. Especially on the UDMA 7 cards.
