Hey all

I have a Macmini, loaded up with SnowLeopard. I use iPhoto to download and store my images; I convert files to TIFF and export them to PS CS5. I'm happy enough with iPhoto, as I use it in such a limited fashion, so I honestly don't want to go switching to another downloading program (or whatever they're called).

Anyway recently iPhoto has started download ALL the images on the card, including those that I already have imported. I have ticked off the boxes for both 'Autosplit events after importing' and 'Hide photos already imported'. But to no avail. So I have to do the tedious drag to select the images I really do want, and use 'Import Selected'. Before it was simple enough to do 'Import All' and it would download only new images.

All I can think is, as I've been shooting some large events recently like horse shows and weddings, that after downloading the card, I have been reformatting it as opposed to just deleting. I don't think this would have anything to do with iPhoto, though.

So what's going on? Why isn't iPhoto recognizing the images that are already imported? What do I do to make it stop downloading the whole frickin card each time?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try using Image Capture to import your photos instead perhaps? That's what I've been using for imports on my Mac.

OR, you could get Lightroom (which I use on my PC, but it's available for both), which works incredibly well for importing and cataloging, and it connects easily with PS. I super dislike iPhoto. =(

Another cataloging program that works well is Picasa, by Google. I know you said you don't want to switch programs, but this is all the advice I have to give (which is pretty limited but it seemed better than the 0 responses posted so far... so ya know).

=/ Sorry I'm not of more help.

Stop "importing" your pictures and use the perfectly adequate Mac OS to just drag your file from the card to the appropriate folder. If you then want to import them for cataloging or keywording, etc. you should be able to do so without affecting the original images on your card.

I think it is always chancey anytime to interpose an additional layer of processing to any operation involving files, especially those which do things "automatically" for you; I avoid it unless absolutely necessary.

+1 As always, Paul's suggestion makes a lot of sense, so will give that route a go. Thanks everyone for your input, it's always greatly appreciated :-)

Actually, Paul's advice will result in duplicate files in the original folder the files are imported since iPhoto duplicates them in its own library file.

I begin with iPhoto closed. I use a card reader, and drag & drop to a monthly folder in my HD. When they are copied, eject the card reader. Then highlight the files and open them using "Preview". With Preview, you can run a full screen slide show, with the option to select which ones you want to send to iPhoto. When you close the slide show, iPhoto will open and import the ones you want. Be sure to eject the card before you begin the slideshow, or iPhoto will try to download from the card when it opens.

If you just want to get the new images into iPhoto, you can do the first three steps above, then open iPhoto, highlight the new ones and drag them from the file and into iPhoto. That way you have unaltered "verification friendly" image files in one file, and also the iPhoto files to work with.

When iPhoto finds new photos on a card reader, it asks if you want to download "All" or download "Selected". You can select the ones you want to add that way if everything is similar to the older iPhoto. When you open iPhoto, have a look in the "Help" files and you may find the solution.

You may also try a "Permissions Repair" using "Disc Utility" from the "Utilities" file if they still do that with Macs. I'm running an early Powermac G5, so it may be different for yours.

I open iPhoto and have it import everything and delete the files off the card. Simple. Nothing left on the card = no duplicates to worry about.
