When I first got my HTC Aspire I was shocked at the speed the battery drained out. A few months on I have found out why it does, and a few things to do to diminish the problem.
There is nothing you can do about the fact that the big bright display need a lot of juice. Set the time out as fast as you can stand.
Most of the power seems to go when the phone is searching. If you aren't using wifi, mobile bluetooth, turn them off. If you are cutting in and out of reception area, turn off the phone, or put it in airplane mode.
Get used to checking what services are running, anything you start tends to stay up till you kill it. Kill them before you they kill your battery.
The sad fact is smart phones drain out faster than flip phones, but to my surprise I found my hungry phone battery lasts over four days when in airline mode ( when out camping), so most of that juice is going into I/O operations. Keep your phone from searching and it will last longer. Imagine if you spent the day yelling at the top of your lungs, trying to find someone to talk to. It is draining |

BrennanOB I really like that comparison.
I've changed a few settings which may or may not make a difference. I'm not sure whether the battery may still build up power after another couple of charges. I was told to charge it for 8 hours though the manual doesn't say anything about this and it certainly seems to get full charge long before that.
I'm thinking the best thing may be to mention the problem at the store and see what they suggest. Then if possible stick with what I have and see if things improve before I actually exchange anything. But at least that way they will know that there may be a problem if I need it sorted out later. The problem is dealing with a big store where the staff don't have any say in what's done and where you may not even get to deal with the same person twice.
It's the 7 day exchange thing that's bothering me. I don't want to find myself in a situation later where they have to send the phone back for repair if I could have changed it for a new one, or where I have to wait for them to test it if only the battery is faulty.
I'm starting to think now that there may not even be anything wrong except my expectations, but it's better to speak to them just the same. |

Thanks to those who offered assistance. I went back to the store and the guy didn't seem to think there was anything wrong. Nor did the person I asked at my service provider. Neither was able to test the battery - apparently it would have had to be sent away where they send their repairs, and that would have left me without it for about 10 days, so I guess I have to accept that it is okay. I have changed some of my settings according to advice given on this forum and I'll just have to wait and see whether it stretches my battery life a bit. A part of me wishes I'd stuck to a simpler phone as I rarely use one anyway, and I don't know how much I'll use its camera as my 7D goes everywhere with me. But sometimes it's easier to get at a phone quickly than it is to take out the 7D, so I figured it could have its uses.
The battery is an inconvenience, but I'll learn to live with it. |

| I don't think my phone has airplane mode. I don't even understand the difference between the modes it does have and as far as I can tell, the manual is no help. But the adjustments I've made so far do seem to be stretching the battery life. |

I've checked the manual and can't find anything about airplane mode in it.
The manual seems well explained so maybe you should take some time with the phone and the manual and try some things out. Would be a shame having payed for the gadgets on it and not using some of the options. |

Thanks, Nadine_Vb. I will do when I have time. It was actually a relatively cheap phone - I was told the price had come down drastically. I really bought it for the QWERTY keyboard and 2mp camera. I have no plans on using it for internet at this stage because it would work out a lot more expensive than my ADSL (Internet is still quite expensive here though not as bad as it used to be). Besides I already spend too much time on the internet without carrying it around with me. |

airplane mode just turns off bluetooth, data and cell service and maybe wifi al at once. the phone never searches for any type of reception so the battery life drastically improves.
one other thing to note, if you have a amoled screen as opposed to lcd, then keep a dark background, amoled screens only use energy when they light a pixel and black pixels are off as opposed to and lcd screen which have every pixel lit. |

Two and a half days after the last charge my battery is still going strong (all 5 bars lit) and entirely due to the wonderful people at DPC.
When I asked at the service provider whether changing the network setting from automatic to my service provider only would help, the lady assured me it made no difference. Yet this is the only setting change I made that could have had such a major effect on battery consumption on a phone that is used only very infrequently.
A huge thank you to everyone who offered advice. I could never have got this sorted out without you. |

Just when I thought all was good, four and a half days and the battery was still on 4 bars. Four bars when I put it away at about 9pm last night, and by midday today (when I took it out again) the battery was so flat the phone had switched itself off. Is this normal?
I was told to charge the battery when it gets down to one bar. How can I do so if I never see it get there? |
