Well, either the comments should be anonymus or members can choose no one should dare commenting on their photos!
I will keep commenting because is lot of fun ! :-)

OK I don't sink the comments should be anonymous, because you and me and everybody ask for comments. So if some body give 2 and make comment , witch looks not good for me I have to scream and yell on this persons because THEY se what THEY SEE and FEEL on my photo . He or She made comments because you ask for this.

Thanks Pitsaman for your comments and score 2 {lol}

Thanks for your honesty,IMHO it is easy to give 1 or 2 on photo without explaining to the person why you think that way.I really apreciate all comments which points on all the flaws on my photos and learning to see those errors you learn for yourself too!

I have received 400 comments. Only two have I not checked helpful. Yours (Pitsaman) was one of them. It would fall into the rude and offensive box. It refers to me, as the photographer, in a negative way.
Wording makes all the difference. I received a variation of your same comment that was not offensive and actually very humorous.

In the motion blur challenge, IMO, motion itself is the subject. You can get very dynamic pictures by panning, blurring or combining panning and blurring to obtain an impressionistic photograph. Personal preference, but motion blur nonetheless.

I don't think knowing a commenter's identity is working very well to prevent irresponsible comments, but I am pretty sure that making them anonymous until voting ends would do a lot to prevent the irresponsible replies and nasty forum disputes that result from comments.

Pits,

As a recipient of one of your comments, actually many comments in past challenges too, your phrasing and word choice can often come across as, well, snotty. It's one thing to comment on a specific lack in a photo. It is something completely different to do so sarcastically. Perhaps it was that tone to which folks were responding.

Shari

I have to agree here. I was one of those who sent you a PM & I used the word harsh. But it was not a complaint or a negative reaction to what you said. Just an observational note. I didnt say which shots were mine either. It was a lighthearted PM plus I agreed with what you said in one of your comments despite how it was phrased!

Besides, someone correct me if I am wrong, but the comments were once anonymous & people complained that they should make it the way it is now. No matter which way it is, these types of threads of dissatisfaction will continue.

So, Pits. if my PM really bugged you, I'm sorry, I didnt intend it to be so. If you say, I will wait until after the voting is done or not at all! Hit me up a PM or a post & let mw know how you feel.

Pitsaman you commented on my Open Challenge

Your comments were straightforward , pulled no punches and .......right on the money.

You also left a tip as to how to improve future shots.

Brilliant, thanks a lot

This is why I'm here, submitting and looking for feedback.

To learn

Dont knock those who take time to comment, I'd rather have a 3 or 4 with a comment on how to improve than a silent 10.

Here is what I have said in another thread concerning comments:

I completely agree with the fact that most learning here is NOT neccassarily done through comments received. I know I have done most of my learning through several things that have nothing to do with comments I have received:

1. Forums- By far the way best way to improve, hands down. Just reading forum after forum will help better than anything here (at least for me). There are always questions being asked that involve improving photography, technique, equipment, etc... I have learned a lot with becoming more familiar with the forums. Plus, If I have a question to improve my photography through the forums, you find that people are a lot more willing because they are in "vote on the challenge mode" and are more than willing to give insightful comments.

2. Just browsing through the challenge history- I have learned to see what kind of shots do well and what kind of elements they have in their shots that made them do well or made the photograph look good. I learn by doing my own trials and error sessions trying to emulate a certain technique. I then leanr the techinique, add my own style, and if it doesn't work, well, there's that trial and error thing again.

3. Giving In-Depth critiques on other's shots- I learned that as time went on, that the comments I make help improve MY photography as well. This is exactly why I joined the Critique Club. I learn a LOT from giving those and some of my best learning experiences have been with those.

Pitsaman- I, too, received a comment from you and thank you for the effort. There will always be a steady stream of newcomers eager to comment, but getting critiques from multiple-ribbon winners is an all-too-rare privelege IMO. I'd rather hear what I did wrong from a good photographer than how much a newbie loves my shot, regardless of the score. It seems that two of the most popular forum topics are complaining about the lack of comments and complaining about the opinions expressed in those comments we do get. You are absolutely correct in your opinion and I can't fault you for it. I had just as many ribbon winners who liked that particular aspect of my entry, and one vote isn't going to kill me.

Some commenters may seem offensive unintentionally because they're not as fluent in English, but we all understand numbers. You might not get as many PMs if you simply don't include your vote in the comment. I generally don't include a number in my comments unless it's a well-earned 8 or better. If you don't tell someone that you're giving them a 4 or less, then they're less likely to get defensive and PM you back.

The reason I haven't been giving out too much "Voting" stage comments are because of a really rude PM I received.

Not getting into details but something about "not having won a ribbon and the type of camera". It just got be down.

I know that 1 rude comment shouldn't ruin my experience here. So I hope to jump back in and start doing my 100 comments a week again.

You are one of the best commenters here, please dont let one person turn you off. You are thoughtful, courtiuos and seem to really examine the photo before you comment.

Keep up the good work !

I really enjoy both leaving comments and receiving comments. I'd like to say thank you to all of you who take the time to give your opinion on the photos. Really, the comments matter more than the score, IMO.

I do like knowing who has left the comment, and would hate to see it become anonymous. I like to check out the profiles of those who have left comments. That's the way I have found several wonderful photos here on the site.

I have tried to comment as much as possible myself, and I haven't yet received any negative feedback.

Kosta, Most of us would only be to happy to receive comments from you,I am always happy to receive any comment good or bad!No canon 200 f2.8 for me but I am staring at my monitor with overhauled eyeballs and I can see without glasses, whopie!Great work on all the coments, I wish I could comment but I still have to rest the eyes as much as I can.
P.S.the lowest score I now give is a 5, so if I really hate your shot thats what you get,LOL.

pitsaman -

Just to let you know - I do appreciate your comments normally, just thought you didn't grasp the challenge description, and apparently Chinstrap had the same thoughts. However, after looking at your average vote given, I find that the score you put down for my image was higher than your average, so I should be happy ;-P
04/04/2004 12:04:49 AM · #42
you know the site started with anonymus comments during the challenge and then revealed the name of the commenter after it was over. at the time of the switch i don't think people invisioned the potential abuse of PMing.

personally, i don't do anything about any PM i get during a challenge. i see it as just begging for a better score. if your picture isn't seen fairly (which there are cases), and it's a good shot, it will be a random occurance. however, if there are many comments about what you thought was so evident not being evident, then i would say you didn't do as good a job as you could have.

how long have you been doing this? i was just curious about it and noticed that your avg. vote cast is lower than 5.

Comments can be written in a more diplomatic and constructive way no matter how brutal they are.

If a photograph is commented on because it fails to communicate its intent, same thing with a comment - it sometimes can also fail to communicate its intent because it is poorly written.

I have been doing this for about 3 weeks now and slowly my average score is creeping up. I think I was way too hard in my voting before and through the 12 step voting program I have amended my ways!I give much higher marks now.Always try to see the positive.

why not just make comments hidden until voting is done, that
way someones comments will not influence someone elses voting?
04/04/2004 02:57:52 PM · #47
if its constructive and not presumptious, why the heck not
leave your name..... ? personally if i dont like the shot i
dont comment

that makes sence. personally i use the whole scale. i don't really care one way or the other how people vote. stats rule in the end anyway.

You can't see others comments during the voting.
