I just wanted to say a quick thank you to everyone on this site who have helped me learn so much about photography! Basically it was my first class of A-level photography today and I found it all so easy and think most of the info I have learnt has came of this site, I'm pretty much the only one with previous experience in the whole class!
I have literally learnt everything I know off here, my first piece of homework is to do a an analysis on some of Edward Westons work (I smiled to myself when he said it haha, thanks to a previous challenge) and I think I will be able to get through the a-level with a lot less trouble than some other people!
So yeh, seriously thank you! |

From DPC to BMOC. :) Nice post. My experience on DPC reinforces what I was told all throughout my school years: "You'll never learn anything if you keep goofing off in class!" |

Ha ha, still and always the class clown!
Just to confirm what Adz said, I have had the same experience. I joined a photography class at a local art school, and was put in the Advanced class. I was soon promoted to the Masters class. I have found that people in class are struggling with concepts such as: high and low key, contra jour, long exposure, bokeh, different points of view and perspective, etc., while I learned all that from DPC challenges. That doesn't even take into account what I've learned from viewing and evaluating all these photos, and from the advice I've gotten from other members.
Three cheers for DPC!

Wait a minute... I didn't know I was not the youngest person here on DPC! Haha!
I too went into a college course where I was above everyone in the class (including the professor) with knowledge. Sounds cocky but when I asked him a simple question about ISO speeds he didn't know what ISO was... Point I am making is, this site has taught me more about photography than anything I have experienced.

Pretty much the same with my teacher! He had only learned it in the past few weeks because a student had told him about him!
It is nice to be ahead of the rest of the class ;-) |

He might be real old school and still think of it as ASA, or even DIN. But more likely not. |

Even so, I think it could only be expected for them to make the correlation between the two.. I can maybe understand if an 'old school' photographer doesn't know the terminology, but a teacher should be expected to 'keep up with the times' IMO. |

I have taught several photography classes for beginners at community centers and technical colleges, much of my wisdom was thanks to DPC, also.
It isn't so much that DPC taught it to me, but it forced me to go search out the know-how myself. It inspired me to learn about - and experiment - with techniques I never would have found out about otherwise.
Some of it was very direct, too, from reading tutorials, forum threads etc.
So Adam, I know what you're saying.....
three cheers for DPC! |

I thought exactly the same thing it was a bit ridiculous! I'm glad I knew about aperture, ISO and shutter speed because his explanations were pretty shocking tbh! I sort of feel sorry for the people that don't have a clue because they will have a hard time understanding!
You guys could teach me better over a computer screen is basically what i'm saying! |

This is why I don't believe in formal education. At least not for photography... But what do I know.. Maybe if I go to school I'll start taking some better pictures.. errr.. |

Yup. Same here. The guy didn't like me too much because I would ask him questions he didn't know. Was more of a game for me than anything. I passed all the tests with my eyes closed practically so it wasn't like I was in danger of failing. Besides, I didn't like the guy because he could have sworn he was THE SHIT at photography. Lol. Granted at the time I wasn't anywhere near as talented as I am now but I knew the terminology which was something he didn't. I made it known that he didn't know basics. Everyone in the class hated me too because they all thought I was cocky when really I knew I sucked. Oh well, I don't care what they thought of me. The feelings were mutual to be honest. |
