I'm in the northeastern adirondacks, looking for some good shots!
Tomorrow we were thinking of going to Ausable Chasm early in the morning...but the chasm walk doesn't open till 9...we were thinking of going there for sunrise, if the light would be good on the falls, and then going and catching breakfast nearby, then coming back after the chasm opens and exploring the walks.
Anyone done that...is it worth going early and shooting from the bridge (since the chasm walks will be closed?

Putting this thread on watch. I've been to the Chasm just once for a quick inner walk around but didn't have a chance to really setup a shot. It was a suprise pop visit with not much time to be had. Long story. Anyway, I want to go there but really take my time. It's a great location. I also saw river rafters there. That might be fun for you guys but with the recent rains it might be closed off to that. Really looking forward to your photo posts, if you happen to share. Have a safe and fun trip!
p.s.
Here's the trail map. They have those same fliers given out there.

Well we picked a fine week to go there...the area where we were staying, Ausable Forks (part of Upper Jay, NY) was one of the hardest hit places in the state by hurricane irene: //www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/01/us-storm-irene-newyorkstate-idUSTRE78006V20110901
But we weren't right on the Ausable river, which caused most of the damage, I think. We were on Fern lake, so we only one rain day, and 24 hours without power. Of course, a tree fell across the road leading to the camp we were staying in, so we were trapped there when we tried to leave once. But after about two hours, crews had removed the tree.
The rest of the week was great, and I got lots of pictures. HOWEVER: getting home was a trip! Route 9N was destroyed in several places that we needed in order to get to the Adirondack Northway without going waaaay North first. A local gave us directions once we got "detoured" with no way to go but north; we went on a 5 mile single lane two-way dirt road through the forest. We were assured it was not going to be pleasant, but it would be passable with our regular two-wheel drive minivan. The only problem is that, since it was the only way to get between Upper Jay, NY and Keene, NY without going four times farther, there would be a fair amount of traffic both ways, and there were hills so we had to be careful not to crest a hill and hit someone head on. That meant 20 miles per hour, honking at each hill. And when someone went the other way, trying to find room on the side without getting stuck in the mud/ditch to let each other pass. We did pass other car, everyone was very courteous, and only once did we hit a stalemate where there was no way we could move over and the other car had to back up a bit so we could each go a bit off the road to pass.
Another thing: the storm damaged everything around...so the Chasm was mostly closed...only the upper trail was open and that wasn't very good. There was so much water that Rainbow falls looked more like the output of a hose, rather than a beautiful falls.
We also went to High Falls, with High Hopes. Nothing on their website or phone message said they were closed...just that they had sustained damage and were looking for volunteers and money. That's a bit weird considering they are a commercial operation. But we drove there anyway, expecting limited access, like the Chasm. There was no access. Fortunately, we decided to see what was at Whiteface in terms of hiking, and we found a gorgeous trail, filled with waterfalls. It's called Steg Brook Trail, and it's so nice we went back three days in a row.
We also went to the Flume...I forget what else it's called, and it was awesome, but dangerous.
I'll post some pics later. I'm thinking this would be a great place for a DPC get together...though maybe we'd skip the Chasm!

Goodness Neil I thought that the Adirondacks were stronger than anything! We spent about 14 summers in Keene Valley in the late 80s and on (never drove, we were just guests) and not a single bad day there. What a timing for you. Magnificent place. Carl Jung adored it while Freud thought that only savages can live there - and they were both prime guests of the creme de la creme of medecine.
Looking forward for your shots.

Back road adventures like that can be the best, when there's no traffic, that is. The wife nags at me to stay on main roads. :-(
I'm looking forward to seeing your shots to see if I can recognize anything.
