Hi there,
Im completely new to photography and have only just bought my first DSLR, been playing around with a few macro shots and some mountain biking pictures, but i took this whilst in dubai last week and i quite liked it. No photo editing has been done yet and i just wanted to see peoples opinion on it and mainly where im going wrong.

All critiques are most welcome

It not letting me post a url to the flickr addres for the photo, how can i get round this?

Just post the address to the flickr as a text, and one of us will parse it for you and make it into a link. You need a minimum number of posts in the forums before you can post links, so get out and talk a lot meanwhile :-)

Here you go:
Dubai Fountains

You can tick the "show short URL", grab that link and paste it when selecting the Insert Hyperlink button.
The normal, long, link didn't work when I tried to insert it.

Edit: and Wendy was faster than me :D

A wonderful image, James! You're off to a really great start. You have a nice composition which gives us a sense of scale, there is enough detail to show the beauty of the fountain and the water, really good and animated silhouettes. You might want to straighten the image a bit as it tilts slightly to the right.

If you want to have a portfolio at DPC, yes you need to be a paid member, $25.00 a year, such a bargain. You can link to other hosting sites without paying for membership, but you have to reach a minimum activity level first; that protects us from spammers. I'm not sure what that minimum is, but someone will know. It's not a lot.

Here it is leveled, as suggested by Tanguera, with Photoshop's skew tool (rotating would have forced a tight crop), and a little more local contrast added, not sure that part's an improvement... Very nice shot.

Are the signs leaning because of perspective issues? I tried adjusting the perspective a bit in photoshop. Also, I'm tempted to do a tight crop on the bottom to get even more of a sense of power from the fountain.

Last small thing -- I cloned out the reflections on the sign on the right. I like the camera flashes going off, but not the reflection.

Very minor things that I'm not sure improve the shot or not. Very nice shot! (In the future, I'd be interested in seeing the same shot from a lower point of view, so that the silhouettes are actually in front of the bright bottom part of the fountain.)

I am beginning to see these little things that really make a photo. Thank you for all you critiques

The thing is -- these little things don't make the photo. You have a good photo to begin with. This is just polishing it. :)
