my biggest complaint about PSE8 is that when I save a picture for the WEB and let's say I need to go back a re-edit it. I have to start all over again because I can't "step" backwards and go to the layer I want...(full-size) Therefore I will sometimes keep my picture "open" and unsaved for days doing more editing steps/corrections (not a good thing in the Lightning Capital of the World)

I get around this issue with multiple copies (I usually end up with 4 ) of the same file. I usually start with a RAW file and as I edit it, I save it as a .psd file. Once the edits are finished, I make a final save as an unflattened .psd so that at least all of my layers are available later (I try to keep each editing operation as a single layer). I then flatten the image and save it as a full resolution jpeg. Then I do my size reductions and sharpening for DPC submittal (or web posting) and save it with the addition of _LR to the file name (indicates low resolution). If that file is too large for DPC, I then do a Save for Web and replace the "_LR" with "_SFW" in the file name and save that copy to a DPC Submittals folder.

If I decide to re-edit the file, I go back to the .psd file and make my changes, then go thru the resizing exercise. So then I have 4 files

"filename_edit1.psd"
"filename_edit1.jpg"
"filename_edit1_LR.jpg"
"filename_edit1_SFW.jpg"

If I want to do a minor re-edit, I start with the .psd file. If I want to make a print, I start with the full size jpeg, do my sharpening based on print size, then print it out or send to on-line service for printing. If I want to post the photo somewhere later on the web, I grab the "...._LR" file.

keep in mind, LR is not just a photo editor. it is a database system that not only catalogs your images, but also your edits. when you are working on an image, you are working non-destructively, seeing how your edits would be applied to your original. only when you are ready to export are those manipulations actually applied to the image file.

sure there are other tools that do a lot of the stuff the LR does, but to have it all in one place, easy to use, makes it preferable to me. and at these prices, you can almost afford to buy it and leave it on your 'unused software' shelf ;-)

fyi, my son's report card from 3 months ago was just approved ;-)

thanks for the amazon info, robert!

as for upgrading, maybe look into adoption...

It would be nice if Canon, Nikon, etc. (hardware) had incentives like this; maybe I would finally get a camera. LOL
