Hey all, was putting up a portfolio on freelanced.com and got an email from this guy asking if I was available for a project. I asked for details and here's his response.
Hello Susan,
How are you,it's nice to hear from you and i hope your family is doing great. There is a big project i will like you to work on.I am presently in U.K now for the forthcoming LONDON OLYMPIC 2012,and my entertainment company which i happen to be the Project Manager is responsible for the welcome and closing ceremony and also sport Celebrity party for this event.i will like to know if you are medically fit to come to UK,because your presence will be required here. Also don't worry about the flight fee, we will be responsible for your first class flight ticket to UK including feeding and Accomodation. You will be paid $110,000 if you agree to be part of this event.Although we will pay you 50% as upfront and pay the rest when you come.
We need you as the official photographer for the celebrities and Sports stars during the event.
let me know if you will available.
Hmmm...so this could either be a tremendous opportunity, or it's just a ginormous scam (perhaps in a future email he'll be asking me for my bank account # so they can *deposit* the up-front fee...in which case I will get him to Paypal me ;-)
Thoughts on this issue? If anyone wants to check this guy out to see if he really is legit, PM me and I'll supply his name and whatever other info I have. |

Oh it has to be legit. Everyone knows that there aren't any decent photographers available in the UK. $110,000 USD to a Canadian for working in the UK makes perfect sense.
Do you need a second?

Yeah, the ol' BS detector is pretty much going off the charts...maybe I should refer him to Simms? :-) |

You can't be serious, Susan? That can't possibly be legitimate. Tell me your post was tongue-in-cheek...

I would continue with the plan....do everything they want but DO NOT give account numbers or any OTHER type of number to them. Let's see if you get the $55000 up front and then we'll talk.

Tongue-in-cheek, Robeart, very firmly so...I can be trusting, yes, but not THAT trusting!!! I mean, the erratic spelling and grammar, random caps etc all tend to lean towards someone whose second language is English, for one...and the hefty fee is just beyond belief.
*off to freelanced.com to see if any Nigerian princes want to fly me out to shoot family portraits for $500k*
ETA: Hmmm how very strange...the guy's profile is no longer up there on that site!!! Now that's a real head-scratcher!!! Guess they found someone else...*deep sigh*...;-)

It would be fun to play out the scam and see how far you can get. :) |

I think maybe not. Early on they would request your bank account information in order to wire transfer the first half of the payment to you. Then, they would pull any money you have in the account out. |

Maybe you will get lucky, and they will pay the advance with a cashiers check. Naturally they will "accidentally" send too much, and ask you to refund the difference.
Cash the check, keep the difference, and run away before it bounces.
One you get the money, I know a widow lady in Nigeria that needs help getting her husband's money out of the country. Wants to share too! She must be getting pretty desperate. I seem to get emails from her several times a month. Often under different names, and different email accounts. I imagine she is having a hard time staying a step ahead of the evil authorities. |

I have done that in the past while selling my Canon G5 through craigslist. I even got a paypal receipt (fake ofcourse).. after few days I started getting emails asking for tracking number, have you shipped my camera yet - he actually got mad at me for not shipping the camera. I had a good laugh, but I can see how many 75 year olds might have fallen for that paypal receipt and actually shipped out the product.

"Cash the check"...Would not do so if you don't wish to get in tremendous trouble.
Picture this: you receive a check - which will obviously be a fake one.
You go to the bank and cash the check. After a few days, the bank discovers the check is fake and they trace back to you, since you've cashed him...
These guys are trying every possible way to get to the money from hard working people. Always remember: if something is too good to be true, often it is. |
