Thanks to all who helped increase the comment count for the Free Study this month - your efforts are very much appreciated! A very special thanks to Dphoto who commented on EVERY entry!! That is a significant accomplishment!

And thanks also to those who commented on my entry - I am delighted with the comments and really appreciate some specific feedback about a crop - I have a hard time cropping because I remember the shot as I saw it, when quite often a bit of a crop here or there really does enhance the photo. In this case, the commenters are quite right - it needs a bit of a crop!

I tried to comment on a few more the other day, I've left 43 comments so far, will try to do more later on.

Grog explain. Is grate comment from Grog. You mark comment helpful or Grog send Thag and Ugggg to visit. Ugggg drink all beer in cave and Thag make couch smell like mastadon leftover from last month.

Ugggg could not find mastadon leftovers -- Thag was smart to hide them from Ugggg -- Ugggg will look under couch next time --- Ahhhh, what is couch and where can Uggg find it???

Looks like big brown rock, but is softer, for females to sit on.

You have rated 338 of 338 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 135 images (40%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.2142.

Started off with the noble intention of commenting on every picture. Ran out of steam after receiving some not-so-flattering private messages. I'm not as good as Dphoto and others at seeing the best in every picture while being critical at the same time. Will probably take me as much time growing up as a critique as growing up as a photographer :) Sorry I upset some of you - nothing personal, I was just trying to help. Lots and lots of amazing pictures in there....

I for one appreciate constructive comments. How you approached mine was done very well. Stated what you like and some issues that you didn't. You did catch something I didn't see. Even if I didn't agree I'd be OK with it. It's your opinion. Some here just want that pretty comment (I like them too) others have thicker skin and run with constructive critiques............Thanks for taking the time to comment!.....ace

wow thats a lot of comments in one challenge! It amazes me why people feel the need to pm others if they disagree with a comment if it is only to sound off, i could understand if it was to seek further feedback but usually it is just to sound off.
maybe all comments should be anonymous until after voting.

That's why I started wearing a brown bag when commenting during voting. Keep up the comments though, more people like them then don't.

I disagree with one of the critical comments on my own entry, but I knew that some intentional aspects of it would not be to everyone's liking. Nice to sometimes know specifically what caused someone to give a less than generous vote. A couple of really positive and appreciative ones as well.

I'll try and do some more voting and commenting later today.

Working on it. Probably won't vote 100%, but heavy commenting has that effect on my voting.

You have rated 199 of 338 images (59%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 51 of 338 images (15%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.6633.
Grog has commented on 12 images in this challenge.

I always enjoy voting Free Studies. You get to see what the photographer enjoyed shooting that month! We all like to enter them, and hopefully do well. And most of us enjoy a bit of feedback, too.

So here's the challenge. As you're voting in the Free Study (or viewing, if you can't or don't vote), comment on one that strikes your fancy. Then comment on the NEXT 9 pictures you get in the random selection! Don't skip any, be thoughtful but honest, and simply take an extra moment to see if you can see what the photographer saw. Repeat this four times, for a total of 40 comments. It's not that hard if you take them in 10-picture increments!

So, vote (or view)... find one that strikes your fancy - comment! Then comment on the next 9 in a row. Continue on, come across another shot that strikes your fancy - and repeat the process. The "9 in a row" bit kinda ensures an even spread of comments across the field, and may give you a chance to take a bit longer look at something that normally wouldn't catch your eye.

Anyone in?

Looks like the comments are way down on this months free study compared to last months. This thread certainly lead to an increase in last months comments tally so why don't we try and make it a regular thing?

I'll give it a shot. It's a holiday weekend here in the states - be advised, however, that I'll be voting from my laptop while visiting Mom! :-)

Man I have just had heavy commenting this Free Study because there are so many freaking awesome pictures! I had no intention of commenting a lot on this one, but picture after picture is drawing a reaction from me and I am only done voting on 19%!

Grog has not gotten started yet. He'll likely warm up his club over the long weekend.
09/04/2011 04:32:31 AM · #68
Last months free study attracted 3000+ comments with 50,000 votes, so far this months free study has 700 comments at the 25,000 vote stage, im not statistician but that's a lot less comments.
Maybe those that don't like voting on challenges they have entered could comment instead.

Anyone have any ideas why comments are down?

"Anyone have any ideas why comments are down?"

Yes ,because we are writing this rather than commenting !!!!!!

Tiny, You write really good comments, constructive not insulting. You commented on nearly all of my entries. Thank you for that! In fact you are the only one who commented on my August Free study so far...

Indeed. Let's shut down the forums until commenting reaches some prescribed level. Want to discuss "why didn't I ribbon," "my dog is dead," or "Obama is stupid"? Find a challenge image that ties in somehow and post your beef. Commenting will go through the roof.
09/04/2011 10:33:26 AM · #73
I didn't read the whole thread so sorry if this has already been discussed.

Melethia, you do realize that if people only vote on their 40 commented photos that they will not count when rollover comes along. You need to vote on 20% (65 images) for them to be tabulated . I don't know if the comments will appear if the 40 votes are not included in the final count. I've always wondered about that myself.

Anyone?
