Hey all,

One of my old professors recently approached me to get involved with a group of tweeting, blogging Tanzanian children she is working with through the Tweets Giving/Epic Thanks non-profit organization.

My prof asked me to get involved because she is looking for people who have gently used digital cameras (point-and-shoot cameras are best, but they are willing to accept any kind of digital camera). As a photographer (and someone who has a great passion for sub-Saharan Africa), I was the first person she thought of. In turn, DPC was the first group I thought of who might be willing to help out this cool cause.

Iâll be collecting digital cameras between now and the middle of September (well, Iâll be collecting then on an on-going basis, but Iâll be collecting until the middle of September for the first batch), then I will send them all on to Mama Lucy Kamptoni, who is in charge of the school where the cameras will be used. I wonât keep any of the cameras. All of them will go to Mama Lucy.

The students â called the âTwitterkidsâ because they have been tweeting too â will be taking a photography class to learn how to use and care for the cameras, then they will be using the cameras as digital tools to help with their education. They will, of course, also share some of their photos using Twitter.

I love this idea so much, and I hope you guys will too. One of the main themes of the work I did in Malawi last year was regarding how life is life, no matter where it is, and we all share the same ups, downs, joys, and sorrows. I also wanted to show the rest of the world that Africa isnât some giant, sorry mass of war, famine, and disease, like the media would have the West believe. The people there are wonderful and beautiful and so smart, and they are eager to learn and do more, regardless of the circumstances the country finds itself in. The Twitterkids project shares that as one of its themes, so I am very glad to be a part of this. You can read more about why they are doing this project on their website (listed below).

If you have any old (but functional) digital cameras, please send them to me so I can pass them on to Mama Lucy. They will also need camera-related items, like memory cards, camera batteries, cords, and chargers.

You can send them to:
Stefanie Giglio
PO Box 296
Millerton, NY 12546
USA

If you are sending from abroad, please note on the customs form that itâs a gift.

Thanks everyone!

Find out more about them at www.epicthanks.org and //vimeo.com/7393038. The main Twitter accounts are @epicchange and @mamalucy. Read more about the school at //shepherdsjr.wordpress.com/ and the Twitterkids at //shepherdsjr.wordpress.com/twitterkids/.

Sounds like a good project, geinafets.
Unfortunately, I don't have any point and shoot cameras that I'm willing to give up,
but I do h ope you get some offers.

Sounds like a great project Stefanie. I have an old Canon 4 MP Elf around here somewhere. I'll dig it up and try and find all the stuff that goes with it and send it to you. Good luck!

A Canon SD 300 Elf is on the way with battery, charger and SD card. Should arrive Saturday.

Come on there has to be others out there that have an old P&S laying around.

Thank you so much for your generosity, J.B.!

I also realized I forgot to mention in my original post that if you search #twitterkids on Twitter, you can read some of the tweets from the kids!

Cool. I'll add them to my Twitter page to keep an eye on things. Good luck on the project.

Great! Nice to be first but I'm still surprised there aren't more of us on DPC that have unused old P&S cameras around for a worthy project.

I refuse, although I like the cause. Still using my (very) old P&S, even enter some challenges with it.

Just another bump for the TwitterKids.

Donating a camera to the TwitterKids is a direct way to impact the education for these children and help them reach the same level of literacy -- technological and otherwise -- that the children in the first world are so blessed with.

I agree with Mama Lucy, this project's mastermind, that education is the way for these countries to help themselves out of poverty. Receiving an international education through the miracle of the internet will only benefit these kids and better prepare them for their futures.
