First day on a new experiment, I'm fed up with how much cable/satellite costs doesn't matter which one they are all the same. So we are doing away with everything except very basic cable and internet. All the shows I watch are on the internet for free anyway. We were with comcast and had the phone/internet/cable package. So now we are without a homephone as well, which is okay since we use cell phones %90 of the time anyway.
I am thinking of signing up for an additional service on the internet, so I can watch a few more shows not currently available for free on the internet. There is Hulu plus(i don't own an xbox or playstation so this is a problem) , Netflix (I did their free trial) I liked it because we own a wii, but I'm not impressed with their selection. Is there something else out there that is comparable that I have missed? Has anyone else tried the no t.v. experiment and liked it?

Wish I could get rid of my cable tv, but I'd have a revolt on my hands.

Haven't owned a TV or paid for cable in over 5 years. Very happy... The best part is that while I do still watch TV, I've found other things to do with my time, and don't watch commercials anymore at all... Life is good. Welcome to the club. |

My setup: Basic cable + Apple TV + Netflix streaming subscription.
Netflix streaming has a lot of good stuff, but does have holes, as you noticed. The Apple TV fills some of those holes, letting me rent or buy occasional items that I can't get on Netflix.
I try not to watch too much TV though, so this might be a less-than-ideal setup for someone who watches more. |

Amazon Prime members get a lot of free streaming movies. I've been a 'prime" guy for a long time there, as the fee more than pays for itself just with free 2 day shipping at Christmas time. After that, it is all gravy. |

I run Hulu through the VGA output of my laptop to the input of my TV for my geek time with Stargate SG-1 :)

I got rid of my Direct TV, and haven't missed it. I kept my internet, so I watch a few shows online. And then there's the torrents that can be downloaded. Not that I do that, but there is the option. My blu-ray player has CinemaNow, which I can stream movies, and watch shows. The catch there is it all costs money. So it's the last choice for TV shows, but good for movies.
The good thing is, I am watching less TV and getting more reading in. |

I laughed enough at this one to get a funny look by my parents in the other room.
I don't really watch TV unless it is a sport and when I need to watch something of importance such as a sporting event.. I hit the local sports bar. That is just me though.

Yeah and they are like a reality series that never gets canceled - at least gonna run for 18 seasons with no off-season breaks - kinda like a soap opera.

Yeah but you won't have time to watch it. |

Jenn, although I pay for cable T.V. package, I don't allow my kids to watch cable TV at all.
Generally, we watch Netflix through the wii, but you already nixed that idea...;-)
What are your favorite things to watch? Perhaps, narrowing down what you like to watch will help you find the right service for you and your family. |

Also, I hooked up my pc to my TV and I have a TV tuner for the PC. So I can use my PC as a DVR for network shows off the antenna, when the new season starts. I can't miss Castle. |

My setup is no cable, HD over the air, Netflix for movies and streaming, TiVo for recording. Cost is about $30/month. |

thanks for the input. I won't miss t.v at all I hardly watch it. I do like to record a few shows to watch while I exersize but other than that I would rather spend my free time taking photos and editing them.
My husband watches a lot of t.v. but he has actually been the one saying we need to get rid of it because he knows he wastes too much time on it and he is hoping that not having t.v. will motivate him to do other things.
It's my kids that will miss it, they don't watch a ton of t.v. especially once school starts, but it is nice to just have some downtime and watch a show or two. Also it's nice to throw on a show for my 3 year old when I need to get in the shower or have something I really need to get done without interruption. I have several shows like Dora the explorer and bubble guppies that I have bought on itunes but I wish there was a way to view them without tying up my computer. |

if its options you want, you can always go the torrent route to get tv shows if you dont mind the legality issues. |

sounds like netflix would be perfect for you, the kids shows selection is actually, very good, trust me i know. get yourself a little WDTVlive or roku box for $100 for better than wii quality.

My close-by neighbors are seasonal visitors to my mountainside. I allow them to log on to my Apple Airport Extreme wifi (guest portion) as a good neighbor policy. A good signal can be attained (unobstructed) for 100 yards. Do you have any neighbors who would share their wifi? |

Setup : Internet, HD channels over air, 8 year old laptop hooked to TV permanently - controlled using iphone app or logmein.com (I am lazy) - Netflix stream, Hulu (not plus - didn't see anything I like), some network websites.
useful tip # 1: make a website like clicker.tv your browser homepage for easier access.
useful tip # 2: if you have ipod/iphone - check logitech mouseserver app - for simple, free and effective control of your laptop/pc hooked to TV over wifi. |

Anyone use their TV as a wireless monitor? that's what I'd like to do. |

Over the air broadcast is free and the picture quality is better than cable or dish. Netflix over the Wii is standard def only but can be HD through a Tivo or PS3. I've also run into several BluRay players that offer Netflix. I would assume they would be HD as well, but I don't know for sure.
Be aware that AT&T is now placing a per-month cap on internet traffic. Over 250GB per month will cost you $10 per 50GB per month. While this does seem like a very high cap, it is possible to hit this if you do a lot of HD movie streaming.
Wireless transmission to a monitor is tricky. It falls into the "you get what you pay for" category. Most wireless monitor solutions downgrade the image to meet bandwidth requirements for wireless. |
