Now that's what I've been watching this thread for! Nice waterfall and cascade shots.

Could you please list the locations for these beautiful scenes? I look forward to visiting places like these in just over two weeks from now.

I'd really, really like to see the locations for these shots.

Yeah, me too. :-)

Mine were all in the SNP, but Janine spent some time south of there. Pretty sure those waterfall shots were all somewhere around the Douthat State Park area.

If I had a choice at a do-over, I'd go to Dark Hollow Falls instead of Rose River Falls. Not sure I'd go back to Rose River. It was "okay", but limited.

Thanks a lot. I'll follow your recommendation to go to Dark Hollow Falls.

Our plans are to fly into DCA on August 2nd, rent a convertible, and drive west of DC somewhere for a couple of days. We'll return the rental car on August 6th and stay in DC until we fly out on the 9th.

It looks like our first destination will be Shenandoah NP and then we'll take it from there. Spontaneously is how I prefer to travel so we don't know yet exactly where we will end up or where we will stay each night. We will be finding places to stay as we go until we settle into our hotel in DC. That's why I'm so eager to find out where the best places are to go for outdoor experiences and photography of lush cascades (not interested in huge waterfalls).

In addition to scenic drives and hikes, we would also like to do some whitewater rafting during our trip. Maybe a mild ride for my 17 year old son's first time and then something a little crazier another day.

We are not limiting ourselves to the Virginia area although if there is enough to see and do there then so be it. But we would consider destinations within a reasonable distance of DC for 3 1/2 day of driving around.

Fredericksburg has some whitewater on the Rappahannock River. This link has several outfitters for whitewater rafting.

West of DC there's some whitewater rafting also, a bit more aggressive I think. Just Google DC Whitewater Rafting and it comes up with a bunch of hits.

Robert....have you gotten the book that I mentioned? Waterfalls of West Virginia & Virginia I will say that all of the information in this book is very accurate Well worth the $20ish I spent on it. You have enough time to still get the book.

It is broken down by Beauty of Falls, Photography of Falls, Hiking Difficulty, Directions. I used this guide to find all the falls that we went on.

I will agree with Barry about Rose River Falls...because the canopy was partially closed we got alot of light through the trees therefore giving us terrible hot spots and very difficult to photograph...maybe if we had either gotten there "very early" or much later in the afternoon it would have been better. And the hike was long for really only the one set of falls. IMO

Bear in mind that Dark Hallow Falls is rated difficult for the hike.

Now if you wanted to go to West Virginia...I have a great "day trip" with about 4/5 falls that are really good. Here is an idea...at Douthat State Park they have Cabins ranging in price from $75 per night on up...they have linens, and basic kitchen equipment. Plus this park has a restaurant that is very good on property...just a thought but we did see these cabins (from the outside) and they would be very nice....they say you have to rent for a wk but they weren't all that busy so they (according to the web) will rent for a min of 2 day stay...

If you go to that state park I can give you a list of several falls in the immediate area, most of which are very easy access some with more hiking involved...we did 4 waterfalls in one day...a long day mind you but it was amazing!!!

I haven't done many of those pictures yet and will later...
