I just downloaded photoshop 7.0 to my new computer and I'm not able to get the actions to work. the regular photoshop is new to me as I'd been using Photoshop Elements 7.0 but I wouldn't think it would be that much different in the actions, ie. click on the action and it goes . . . The arrow is grayed out and and has the circle with the line through it when the mouse rolls over it.
any thoughts as to what I might be doing wrong? |

Why are you using a 9 year old version of Photoshop on a new computer. Adobe Photoshop CS2 is not even fully supported under a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system.

Still happens after rebooting? |

Questions:
- What type of file are you working with?
- Are some other functions grayed out as well?
One specific issue is that Ps 7.0 had some really severe limits on what could be done when editing 16-bit files. If you are dealing with 16 bit per channel files, try converting them to 8-bit and see if that resolves the problem.
Unfortunately, Ps 7.0 is so old that you probably aren't going to find many folks with access to it, or who remember the details of its operation. |

I use it because I'm not a professional photographer so the need for the newest isn't necessary for me and I got it for free. yes, it appears some other functions are grayed out as well and yes, it's the same way every time I turn on the computer. I was able to get them to work about two times right after it was downloaded but not since. I think being such a novice as I am I'm probably in the wrong place. thank you for the help. |

Check that the image is in 8-bit mode, not 16-bit.

Lots of novices here, in fact it's one of the best places on the web for novices to learn quickly |

That's in the menu bar along the top: "Image>Mode>8 bit" is what you want. Some third-party software defaults to 16-bit when it creates its output; Photomatix Pro comes to mind. And Adobe Camera Raw, Adobe's RAW converter, will output 16-bit images to photoshop if it's told to do so; it remembers the last-used output parameters.

why don't you go back to PSE 7. It is what I use, and I have found very little I can't do, except for masking and I just subsitute the eraser tool for that. Someday I will upgrade to PSE 9(it has masking) but I don't think I will ever have use for the professional version of photoshop. |

Ahem ... I'm pretty sure I can get access to it by tomorrow, though I'm not too sure I'll be able to help because I'm more used to using version 5.0 (the 15 year old one) ... ;-) |

I will echo what Fritz said, for a novice this is one of the best places you could ask. I don't have an answer for you, but this is one community where lack of knowledge is no reason to be unkind or refuse to help someone (unless you are over in rant).

I still have it on my desktop machine, I believe. I was using it until 3 years or so ago. I remember it well.

It sounds like you have a 'set' selected rather than an actual action (I may of course be very wrong here, but I have made the mistake myself, I use CS2). If you click the little arrow at the right it opens the set and then you can select an action and then the 'play selection' arrow at the bottom should work.

That's a thought, could well be that. Good call, james...
