With DPC, it can be a hit-or-miss thing.

Same here, went from a 6.6 to a 5.6 with 4 votes. Ouch! That's ok. I'm with you on the score thing. Plus, it's really really early and things change so much from here to the end. I'm just enjoying looking at all the shots that blow mine out of the water. :)

I just looked at a few of your shots and I really like your style of photography! I sure hope I voted high on what I am sure is an awesome shot!

For fun a did a little spreadsheet to watch the initial votes. I think I caught your mad "outlier" voter in the act a minute ago:

Votes______Score_______Total_______New_Votes___Avg_Score
1__________6.0000______6___________-___________-
8__________5.5600______44__________7___________5.43
11_________5.1818______57__________3___________4.33
12_________5.2500______63__________1___________6
13_________5.3000______69__________1___________6
14_________5.5000______77__________1___________8
16_________5.7500______92__________2___________7.5
18_________5.6670______102_________2___________5
19_________5.5263______105_________1___________3
20_________5.3000______106_________1___________1
21_________5.4200______114_________1___________8

Well, I screwed up. I went downstairs to get an image ready to upload. I thought about it earlier when I was up on the computer. I went downstairs and turned on CSI and watched two episodes and totally spaced getting the image on here. Crap!

Just had a "preview" looking at the thumbnails. It is superb! I was not sure if to submit or not as I did not have the time (and better tools) for this challenge. I did have submit a pic that I thought was one of the best this month and I was expecting to be somewhere in the low 4's. Happily is not! I have a 5.2 after 17 votes and a positive comment. :)
Ups! 5.01 after 25 votes. Still happy. Only to have all of these beautiful pictures to enjoy and learn from it.
Good luck everybody.

I must admit that I was shocked to see my score drop from around 5.5 this morning to 4.6 now.
That's the fastest drop ever.
I don't think my shot is a winner by any stretch but I truly didn't expect a sub-5 kind of score on this one.
Wonder if my entry is actually crapper than I thought or whether there really are some very harsh voters going through at the moment.
I'm about to leave so at least I won't see the score drop further for the rest of the week!

Maybe all those April Fools voters will grow up in the afternoon (only 9:20am in "Far" Eastern Canada yet)

I am sure my question applies to march free study as well as any other contest conceived of here. Do people just look at the obvious in images here instead of using their mind? I am beginning to worry that nobody really thinks about what they are viewing here otherwise they might understand something more to some images placed here that the maker had more than the simple wit of a 2 year old when making his statment. Oh well what do I know. Cheers have fun viewing!

I started watching my score at 8 votes, where it was at 6.7. I considered that a decent score for the time I put into this one. At 10 votes, it was at 6.5. ...ok

At 23 votes, 5.8. ...Hmmm?

I went to bed at 30 votes, 5.5. ...God, is this free-fall going to stop before I wake up?

I woke up at 6:30 am, 40 votes, ...5.1

My Orange entry received a deserved 4.76. I took virtually no time with it, and submitted it simply for the sake of submitting something. ("What you reap is what you sow." "Garbage in, garbage out." etc...)

BUT, ...my March Free study is NOT a 5.000, Damnit!! Yeah, I need a hug... :-(

Ok, on my way to the lowest score yet! I'll be lucky if I get a 4.5 out of this one. But, I knew it wasn't my strongest work and it isn't my favorite photo. I actually unsubmitted my first photo and submitted a different one 15 minutes before the deadline. I don't think the other one would have faired much better. Oh well, you get what you pay for I guess. My Out of Place entry is slipping, but it's still my highest score yet.

My guess is someone went on a 3,2,1 rampage this morning. I picked up 13 (33%) new votes from 3 to 9:00 am EST and dropped .5 point.

Yeah, I agree. But s/he's still rampaging, and s/he has friends.

Isn't there some sort of "statistically valid" function Drew and crew have built into their vote tabulation algorithm ...to weed out such mean-spirited votes?

All this talk about scores so early in the voting process is somewhat amusing. A couple 1's or 2's this early will have a much larger effect on your score now than they will at the end of the week, when you have 200 votes and that 1 vote you got earlier today is only accounting for 1/2% of your score.

Relax, let the week play out, and at the end when it is all said and done, you'll have just as valid an accounting of your score as everyone else. I never put much weight into the first 48 hours of voting, much less the first 4 or 5. You need a much larger statistical sample than that.

That's what we're doing, EddyG - amusing ourselves. I find this a very relaxing exercise. Thanks.

This is true, but there seems to be a large number of people with scores below 6. In a free study where there is no 'meeting the challenge' it is quite hard to believe, to me at least, that a large number of people are receiving so many 1's and 2's. Whereas we always complain about our scores on the first day, usually there are some with fairly decent to high scores that lets you think 'well i must suck then' but this time there seems to be people with consistently good past scores that likely entered great shots doing barely just above average, and a lot of them at all. I think it is the coincidental low scores that has people wondering more than anything else.
