LOL... :P But some people like those kind of pictures... with the number of members; everyone has a different interpretation for the challenges. And yep, flowers always popping up in (almost) every challenge (not that they're bad though, some are really good!).

Ah, I thought you meant my current entry for Out of Place. I wasn't unhappy with an 89% finish in Orange!

OK. Well that makes better sense. I wouldn't have been unhappy with that either. Good job by the way. I guess I should have looked at the score. I just assumed you were talking about that one cause we can't see the Out of Place shot.

Iテつエm very depressive with this challenge, but I suppose sometimes it would have to happen.

I'm only a new kid on the block at DPC, but I thought 'out of place' was a good concept for a challenge (definitely better than 'wheels'!). But I agree that there are a lot of off-topic entries... this is the first time I've voted, and had to wonder if a lot of people had actually read the challenge, or just thought they had to submit any photo they took this week :-)

It's also been my best challenge for scores... got about 4.4 and 3.8 for the last two, but I'm on 5.4 for this one. Things are looking up!

I have just finished voting on the テ「廾ut of Placeテ「 challenge and found it very difficult to rate the submissions. The definition of the challenge clearly states:

テ「ツヲTake a photograph where something or someone seems odd "AND" out of placeテ「ツヲ

There seem to be a lot of pictures where

テ「ツヲsomething or someone seems odd "OR" out of placeテ「ツヲ

Do you think I have interpreted the challenge wrong?

Riley- I don't see them as separate requirements. If something is out of place, then that would be odd and vice-versa. I think it would be almost impossible to show only one clearly.

This is not a course in semantics. If you can see how it relates to the title of the challenge ("Out of Place") then just vote on how good a picture you think it is.

I think "odd" and "out of place" are separate requirements, although I agree that one will usually follow the other. If "out of place" means it is necessarily odd, then that renders the "odd" requirement in the rule superfluous and so why would they include it in a carefully drafted challenge rule. If you set the dinner table with the wine glass to the wrong side of the plate it would be out of place, but I wouldn't say it was odd.

6.8462 after the first hour of voting last night.
6.2308 at 10 am (EST) this morning (10 hours later).
6.4327 at 8 pm (EST) this evening.
6.4836 at 11 pm (EST)...right now.

With 8 comments.

I'm happy! ^_^ This is my highest scoring yet!

And yeah, I don't think mine's necessarily "odd" but it is "out of place"...

I seem to be stuck in a battle of "really hate" or "really like"
Started in nice 6's, dropped below 5 over night & had climbed back to 5.24 as of now. Only 2 comments & were from higher scorers. I'd love to know what all the 3's & 4's think. My others haven't swung this much.I see several high scores go through & bring it up & then several low ones drag it down.

i agree w/the person who posted this thread.....i know my pics aren't the best(ok some of them TOTALLY SUCKED...haha)....but what were some of these people THINKING??? you can DEFINATLY tell who is going to win this challenge....i guess i was just a little disappointed......

very hard to view these photos, very few seem to meet the challenge.

saying my entry is ODD but doesnt meet the challenge, roll on

As GeneralE so eloquently suggested, trying to read between the lines is pointless. Just take "Out of Place" at face value and judge the photos on their merits. Since there can be different interpretations, I'm trying to be a little more open here on suitability. My current score would suggest that others are not so lenient.

EDIT- Basically, if I can see something in the photo that's unusual or wouldn't ordinarily belong where it is, then it fits the Challenge... it's odd that it's out of place. My 2テつ「

IMHO I don't think most of the entries read the discription of the challenge....I found it very hard to judge based on the fact that for the most part they didn't seem odd or out of place at all...maybe that's just me?
04/01/2004 02:07:33 AM · #42
I have just begun voting, and am amazed at how many BAD pictures - i mean blown out highlights, terrible exposures,. I bet teh walmart folks don't see this many bad pics in a day!

I also see many pics that don't do well at representing 'out of place'.

We'll see as things go on, but I don't like looking at so many ugly pics.
04/01/2004 02:11:52 AM · #43
Biting tongue as I just watched a 1 go by on my entry...right after an 8
04/01/2004 03:01:31 AM · #44
well, finished voting. tried to bite my tounge on a few pics, but still had to let loose on a few. Some REALLY bad pictures, the worst i have ever seen perhaps, entered in this challenge. I HOPE they are newbies and not folks that should know better. (i mean techncially bad - overexposed, out of focus, etc).

A couple of shots of art - see the rules folks - Artwork. Literal photographic representations of the entirety of existing works of art (including your own) are not considered acceptable submissions, however creative depictions or interpretations are permissible. This includes, but is not limited to paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and computer artwork.

If the last challenge caused pop cans to be DQd, then there will be lots more of that this time!

I was hoping for more candid shots than staged ones... :( Quite dissappointed with quite alot of shots in this challenge.

I walked around with my camera looking for something that was OOP, AND could make a good photo, But as I didn't get anything I resorted to a studio shot. Sorry.

By the way I have also experienced a megga slide also.
6.7 on the first day, & down to 5.7 now. Ouch! I calculated the last 8 voters averaged 2.7 !!!
You ghuys suck!!! I only give out of focus off topic unrecognizeable snaps anything below 4. If I see effort has gone into creating the image, I reward for that too.

My pic started above 7 for the first night and has steadily declined. I'm at 6.4 now (was 6.6 two votes ago...)I really like this pic but I was worried it wouldn't meet the challenge in some people's eyes. But now that I see the other submissions... mine fits the challenge at least as well if not better than a lot of the others.

I've only voted on 4 shots at the moment of which deserve a 10... i hope you're not implying anything. Anyway, my interpretation of the challenge was something more candid... sorry if i offended anyone. Ditto, my vote is on a mega slide too but it seems you're doing better. Started with 5.9, now down to 5.3 with 150 votes now:( Funny enough, it seems that we're not the only ones... i was going thru another forum ("so frustrated") and there are quite a few of us going thru this. Anyway, good luck to all!
04/01/2004 09:33:18 AM · #50
Yes I am implying. GIVE ME A 10!!!!!
Naa. I believe a 10 should be reserved fo those photos that realy stand out, where you want to look at again & again, where A poster could be made from it.
None of mine match that criteria (yet).
But votes in the region of 1 to 4 should be for real rubbish. People who are making an effort to get that brown ribbon, or poorly executed snap shots without any artistic attributes.
Amen!
