This is a photo of my husband's kids about 15 years ago. He doesn't have very many photos of them at all while they were little. I was kinda hoping someone would help me out a little. I'd like to surprise him with this photo on canvas in the new living room he just built for us before he has to leave out of town again in August... this time for a year. I love the squished up nose and the crinkled up toes, but I hate the background and the discoloration at the bottom. If anyone could pitch in or provide some tips I'd greatly appreciate it!
Also, how come I can see everyone's profile pic but mine in these forums?

I have it downloaded and will try and work on it later today. One question before I get started, what do you not like about the backround? Would you like it a more even brown without the wrinkles or just a plain black or grey with the sepia tone?
One more question the photo looks really dusty, is it just the way the photo is or is it from your scanner. If it is from the scanner I would dust the scanner and try scanning it and posting it one more time, it would make editing it a lot easier. If it is an old scan and there is nothing you can do about it, no problem, we can clone out the dust specs it will just take a lot of time.

Thank you Jennifer :)
I guess it's the prop I don't like more so than anything. The backdrop is fine minus a few of those harsh wrinkles. Black, grey, or sepia?... doesn't matter I don't guess. Totally up to you... and thanks again! |

+1 on the dusting suggestion... take a lint-free wipe and clean the scanner bed, the cover (so you don't shed dust back on the bed), and then very carefully wipe the dust from the photo. What I suggest for getting dust off the photo is a tack cloth. These are available in a hardware store, and are intended for removing sanding dust from wood before finishing. A very light pass with one of these will remove the surface dust without leaving anything behind.
Otherwise, the scan looks good, and the photo is in reasonably good shape. |

I'll try too. Not sure how to fix the purple but I'll give it hell trying. I love playing with stuff like this. I'll post what I can come up with later |

Super quick edit just to mess around but others here are really good at restoring images.

I also recommend a duotone (sepia, gray, etc.) for this ... cleaning the dust and scratches would take about 15 minutes, but cloning out the trunk and replacing it with more backdrop will take longer. If you're not partial to the background you might consider cropping a bit from the left to center the pair, then surrounding them with an elliptical or round-cornered rectangular vignette, both darkening/lightening it, and applying some blur to de-emphasize the background. |

Probably not restoration as much as object removal.
Anyway, if anybody wants to continue my work with a TIFF or, heaven forbid, the PSD, let me know and I'll send it out. |

Here is my edit, I ran it through SEP2 to get rid of the discoloration and then re-added the sepia tone. Then I added a new background to get rid of the trunk and then I did a small amount of spot removal to get rid of the bigger dust specks. I will let you go through with the spot removal tool and get rid of the rest of the specks you can do as many or few as you would like to. |

I love it Jennifer, thanks! Other than a few specks on his nose and pants, I'm going to keep it as is. My hubby's going to LOVE it!! You're awesome.
Thanks to all the others that gave it a whirl too, of course. :D I love DPC.
Now, does anybody know why I can't see myself in the forums, but can see everyone else? |

BTW: the new background is courtesy of DPC's texture library. I think it is actually dirty water but works perfect for backgrounds this isn't the first time I have used it. |

Wait, I wanna play too! Cute photo, I just hope I didn't destroy it while editing with a splitting migrane. LOL.
