Click for the video to this illusion.
This is an interesting and disturbing thing my brain is doing to me.
I can't look away. |

I watched that a couple of times last night and honestly could tell what the "illusion" was. ??? A bunch of different faces flashing on the screen? None of them looked particularly horrific to me.
Maybe my brain doesn't work right. |

Worked for me. You gotta stare at the crosshairs in the center. Maybe it only works on men. I'd guess if they put up a bunch of hideous faces and after enough beers, they would all start to look beautiful. ;-) |

Worked for me and my wife, so its not just a male thing. Funny thanks for the link. |

Apparently my eyes "cross" when looking at the cross. If I force them not to, they do look a bit disconcerting. Kinda hurts though. |

VERY odd. I think it has to do with peripheral vision, which is what we're using to "see" the faces, as our main focus is on the cross. |

I'm diplopic. It kind of works, but as I relax my eyes, the pretty ones gradually slip under the cross hairs. |

I've been trying all day to come up with some witty statement about this, but I can't. I'm still shocked my brain is causing this to happen! |

apparently its because the faces are so perfectly aligned when you look at the cross, your brain ends up merging the faces

I couldn't believe how often this person's face came up for me. |

I'm not so sure about the peripheral vision thing...Your P vision is WAY off the the sides. The faces are pretty much dead straight on.

Exactly right. Take a few minutes to look the faces individually as well as staring at the cross and you will see that the effect is being caused by a merging of features from the 2 faces. |

Wow. Monsters.
Reminds me of something I used to do with my friends...sit in a dark room with someone where there is just a little bit of light and stare at them...they will turn into something terrifying indeed. |

Also reminds me of that child game "owls", where the two of you close your eyes, put your faces together with nose and forehead touching. Then opens your eyes... MONSTERS. Or owls... |

I think it's the peripheral vision. Try covering up one of the faces and it still ended up working for me.
Making my brain create monster faces made me think of this other optical trick of the brain. It's amazing that we have two big blind spots directly in our line of vision, but our brain fills in the details for us. |

I haven't checked it out yet, but I'm wondering if I can adapt the technique to help people look at stereographs without a viewer. |
